Job Overview

We are looking for an Electrical Propulsion Engineer to complete our consultants Workforce Management Service to support the Propulsion, Aerothermodynamics and Flight Vehicles Engineering Division of the European Space Agency (ESA) at their location in Noordwijk, the Netherlands.

The purpose of this Support Service is to provide general technical services and manage activities related to Research and Technology Development, digital modeling and simulation, laboratory tasks, and engineering support. R&D engineering includes (non-exhaustive list):

Research & Development Activities
  • Contributing to technology forums and proposing R&D activities aligned with the Division’s vision;
  • Entering activity proposals into the tools and coordinating with the Programme for the procurement process;
  • Implementing and updating repositories and collaborative tools with activity progress, organising the final presentation, and contributing to the visibility of R&D results and knowledge transfer within ESA.

Please note, the successful candidate will be employed by ATG Europe (or one of its subsidiaries). Upon selection, they will be subject to a general security screening performed by an external provider (further information will be provided at the interview stage).

Key Responsibilities Simulation Tools and Laboratory Support
  • Implement all the ect to the specificity of the different electric propulsion technologies;
  • Participate to the regular EPL laboratory monthly meetings;
  • Support in the technical expertise provided to ESA Member States test facilities stakeholders;
  • Support the development and maintenance of electric propulsion modelling tools.
Engineering Support
  • Review project documentation as produced throughout the project lifetime in the area of Electric Propulsion;
  • Assess technical knowledge gaps and research questions identified by ESA for their studies and projects;
  • Perform engineering analysis using literature research, analytical models and numerical tools to address these knowledge gaps and research questions;
  • Interface with other project engineering disciplines within ESA in support to the Electric Propulsion engineering;
  • Develop and/or improve software models, tools and processes to support all mentioned activities;
  • Provide lessons learned and proposed updates to processes and procedures identified as part of the engineering support.
General Services to the Simulation Tools and Laboratories
  • Improve the work share among the laboratories, the capability and throughput of the laboratories;
  • Increase equipment and facility availability and usage for testing and simulation tools validation;
  • Increase the number and diversity of customers;
  • Manage the tests for customers;
  • Manage the simulation tools and provide computation results;
  • Maintain the quality management system for the simulation tools and laboratory according to the ISO 9001 certification;
  • General maintenance and servicing of laboratories equipment and infrastructure covering calibration, inspection, facility improvement, training, and test execution.
Application Requirements
  • Master’s Degree in Engineering in a relevant discipline from a recognised institution or equivalent;
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the field of space propulsion and instrumentation for electric propulsion systems;
  • Experience with design, installation and operation of high‑voltage electric circuits and mass flow management systems;
  • Familiarity with vacuum technology and operation of vacuum facilities;
  • Familiarity with EP diagnostic systems, including direct thrust measurement systems and plasma probes;
  • Familiarity with common measurement automation and data analysis software (e.g. LabVIEW);
  • Familiarity with implementation of electrical safety requirements, preferably authorised to perform NEN3140 inspections;
  • Experience with working in an ISO 9001 accredited laboratory;
  • Team spirit and positive, result‑oriented work attitude;
  • Motivation for continuously acquiring new skills auto‑didactically, to adapt to a changing laboratory environment;
  • Good technical assessment capabilities and solid communication skills in English language (verbal and in writing);
  • Candidates must be eligible to live and work in the EU;
  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken.
