How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

Employment Type: Permanent PAYE or Freelance

    The Opportunity

Are you an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer looking for your next career move with an established and growing mechanical contractor?

I am working in partnership with a highly reputable mechanical building services contractor with over 35 years of industry experience, specialising in the delivery of heating, ventilation and air conditioning solutions across a range of technically challenging and high-value projects.

Due to continued project demand, they are looking to strengthen their design team by appointing an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to support a growing portfolio of work across the commercial, healthcare, laboratory and education sectors.

With projects across London, Birmingham, Cambridge and Oxford, this is an excellent opportunity to work on varied schemes, contribute to the development of high-quality mechanical design solutions and become part of an established team with strong technical expertise.

Based from modern offices in Luton, the position offers a competitive salary of £65,000–£75,000, a benefits package and hybrid working, with one day working from home each week. The client is also open to freelance arrangements for candidates who prefer a contract-based opportunity.

    The Role

Reporting to the M&E Design Manager and working closely with the Senior Design Manager, you will play an important role in developing, coordinating and delivering mechanical building services designs from initial concept through to installation.

    Your responsibilities will include:

    * Producing detailed mechanical designs for heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems across a varied portfolio of building services projects.

    * Developing mechanical layouts, schematics, drawings and technical documentation using AutoCAD.

    * Undertaking mechanical design calculations and assisting with the selection and sizing of plant, equipment, ductwork and pipework.

    * Reviewing specifications, client requirements and technical information to develop practical, efficient and compliant design solutions.

    * Coordinating mechanical designs with electrical services, consultants, project teams and other building services disciplines.

    * Liaising with project managers, suppliers, subcontractors and site teams to resolve technical queries and support successful project delivery.

    * Ensuring designs meet relevant building regulations, industry standards, project specifications and health and safety requirements.

    * Managing design deliverables across multiple projects, maintaining quality, accuracy and agreed deadlines.

    * Supporting the installation phase by reviewing design changes, responding to site queries and helping overcome technical challenges.

    About You

To be successful in this role, you will ideally have:

    * At least five years' experience in mechanical building services design.

    * Experience working on large-scale mechanical or M&E projects, ideally with project values of £10m or above.

    * Strong knowledge of HVAC systems and mechanical building services principles.

    * Good working knowledge of AutoCAD and the ability to produce detailed mechanical services drawings.

    * Experience coordinating designs with other building services disciplines.

    * A good understanding of relevant regulations, standards and design requirements.

    * Strong communication and organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and work collaboratively with project teams.

    * Revit experience would be advantageous but is not essential.

    What's In It For You?

    * £65,000–£75,000 salary, depending on experience, with flexibility for the right candidate.

    * Benefits package alongside your remuneration.

    * Hybrid working, with four days in the office and one day working from home.

    * Permanent or freelance flexibility, depending on your preferred working arrangement.

    * Varied, high-value projects across commercial, healthcare, laboratory and education environments.

    * An established employer with over 35 years of experience and a strong track record in mechanical building services.

    * A supportive design environment, working alongside experienced design management professionals.

    * Modern offices and free on-site parking at the Leighton Buzzard head office.
