How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

Temporary Works Designer – Civil Engineering

    Location: Sheffield – site-based
    Salary: £65,000–£75,000 depending on experience
Employment: Permanent preferred; freelance considered at an agreed day rate
    Start: As soon as available

Join a superb Tier 1 civil engineering contractor and see your designs put into practice.

Kestrel Talent is recruiting for a Temporary Works Designer to support the delivery of projects from a Sheffield site.

This is an opportunity to work close to the construction teams, understand the challenges on the ground and develop solutions that directly influence how projects are built. You’ll bring your technical expertise to an experienced contractor delivering important improvements to wastewater infrastructure.

If you enjoy solving practical engineering problems and seeing your work progress from calculations to construction, this role offers that involvement.

    The opportunity

    • Take ownership of temporary works designs, calculations and supporting technical information.
    • Work directly with site teams to understand construction methods, constraints and sequencing.
    • Develop safe, practical and buildable solutions for excavation support, shoring and associated temporary works.
    • Coordinate with design checking and temporary works teams.
    • Resolve technical queries and adapt designs as project requirements develop.
    • Clearly communicate design assumptions, limitations and residual risks.

    What you’ll bring

    • Proven temporary works design experience within civil engineering, including personally producing calculations and design information.
    • Relevant civil or structural engineering qualifications.
    • Experience designing excavation support, shoring or comparable temporary works.
    • A sound understanding of ground conditions, loading, stability and construction sequencing.
    • Knowledge of temporary works procedures, design checking and health and safety considerations within design.
    • A practical, collaborative approach and the confidence to work closely with construction teams.

We’re interested in designers from highways, rail, water, tunnelling, marine or basement construction who bring relevant below-ground temporary works expertise.

    Why consider it?

    • Join a highly regarded Tier 1 civil engineering contractor.
    • Earn £65,000–£75,000, depending on experience + package
    • Work alongside the people building your designs, with clear involvement in site delivery.

    Interested?

Apply with your CV and availability, along with a brief outline of the temporary works you have personally designed. Freelance applicants should also include their day-rate expectations.
