How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

Construction Planner / Programme Manager- Hospital Life cycle Programme
Temp to Perm | Equivalent to £65,000 plus car when permanent | Hybrid working

Hays is working with a major facilities and construction partner to recruit a Senior Planner for a long-term hospital life cycle programme. This is not purely a technical planning role. We are looking for someone who can take ownership of the programme, understand the wider construction and commercial picture and confidently lead programme conversations with senior stakeholders and delivery teams.

The environment adds another level of complexity. The programme incorporates hospital, PFI, lifecycle, fire safety, passive fire, maintenance, M&E and construction activity, all being delivered within a live operational setting.
The lifecycle programme is valued at approximately £5m to £8m, alongside contracts worth around £8m per year, with the wider contract running through to 2042.

The roleYou will take ownership of the integrated programme and provide the project team and senior stakeholders with a clear view of progress, risk, dependencies and priorities.

Develop, maintain and control integrated programmes across lifecycle, maintenance, construction and building services.
Take ownership of programme activity relating to Schedule 38, fire safety, passive fire, defects, capital works and operational activities.
Work across multiple workstreams, understanding how each element affects the wider programme.
Lead programme discussions with Project Managers, Senior Project Managers, contractors and key stakeholders.
Confidently present and explain programme information in operational, client and governance meetings.
Challenge sequencing, durations, dependencies and delivery assumptions where required.
Identify critical paths, delays and emerging programme risks before they impact delivery.
Develop practical mitigation and recovery plans to get programmes back on track.
Understand how design, procurement, commercial decisions, contractor performance and construction delivery affect the overall programme.
Maintain programme baselines, revisions and change control.
Produce clear programme reports and dashboards that allow stakeholders to understand what is happening, why and what action is required.
Sequence works effectively within a live hospital environment, minimising disruption to ongoing operations. What we are looking forThe client needs more than someone who is technically strong at producing and updating programmes. We are looking for someone who can demonstrate:

Strong planning and programme controls experience within construction, building services, lifecycle, facilities management, major refurbishment or another complex project environment.
A track record of owning and controlling programmes, rather than simply updating individual schedules or work packages.
A good understanding of the full construction process, including design, procurement, commercial considerations, sequencing, delivery and handover.
Strong commercial awareness, with an understanding of how changes to the programme can affect cost, risk and delivery.
The confidence to sit in front of senior stakeholders, explain the programme and have robust conversations around performance, delays and recovery.
The ability to challenge Project Managers, contractors and delivery teams constructively where programme commitments are at risk.
Experience managing multiple workstreams, dependencies and competing priorities.
Strong understanding of critical path, programme risk, mitigation and recovery planning.
The ability to turn complex programme information into clear actions and recommendations.Sector experienceExperience within hospital, healthcare, PFI or lifecycle environments would be particularly valuable because of the complexity of the programme.Similarly, experience involving fire safety, passive fire, capital works, M&E/building services and refurbishment within live environments would be highly relevant. However, we are also interested in strong Senior Planners from Tier 1 or Tier 2 main contracting, major construction, M&E or complex refurbishment backgrounds who can demonstrate genuine programme ownership, commercial understanding and stakeholder management.

SystemsExperience using Asta Powerproject and Excel is preferred, although candidates with strong experience using another recognised planning system will also be considered.

Working patternThe role can require five days on site depending on project requirements. Once established, there is hybrid flexibility, typically around three days on site and two days working from home.

Career progressionThis is a long-term opportunity within a contract that runs through to 2042. As the successful person becomes established, there is scope to take greater ownership of the planning function and develop into a planning management position.

    Package

Permanent package: Equivalent to approximately £65,000 plus car.
    Route: Temp to perm.
Working pattern: Hybrid once established, subject to programme requirements. If you are an experienced Senior Planner who enjoys taking control of a programme rather than simply reporting on it, and you have the construction knowledge, commercial awareness and stakeholder confidence to influence delivery, I would be keen to speak with you.
