Do you enjoy solving complex engineering problems, coordinating multiple disciplines and making sure projects come together successfully?
Salary: £65,854 – £77,474 including Flex Fund
Location: Birmingham (Snow Hill, transitioning to Washwood Heath site)
Closing Date: 28 October 2026
I am recruiting for a Senior Project Engineer – Light Systems to support the delivery of the £856m Washwood Heath Depot contract, a flagship element of HS2's railway infrastructure programme.
My client is looking for a well-rounded rail systems engineer who can work across multiple disciplines, coordinate complex technical interfaces and ensure that engineering designs and construction activities align with the wider depot delivery programme.
This is a highly collaborative, delivery-focused role where your ability to communicate, challenge and solve problems will be just as important as your technical knowledge.
Rather than focusing purely on technical assurance or standards compliance, you will help bring together the different systems, contractors and engineering teams required to deliver a fully integrated and operational depot.
Essential Requirements
Strong engineering background within rail systems, ideally including signalling, SCADA, telecommunications or associated control systems.
Experience in multidisciplinary engineering integration, interface management or technical coordination on major infrastructure projects.
Broad understanding of how rail systems interact with civil engineering works, power infrastructure and other railway disciplines.
Experience working alongside Tier 1 contractors, engineering consultancies or major infrastructure delivery organisations.
Proven problem-solving ability, including identifying technical issues and developing practical solutions to protect project delivery.
Strong communication, negotiation and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to engage confidently across different engineering disciplines.
Experience taking responsibility for engineering activities and demonstrating successful delivery outcomes.
Ability to interpret technical designs and understand their implications for construction, installation and systems integration.
Desirable Experience
Previous experience working on rail depots or large-scale railway infrastructure programmes.
Experience in systems integration, engineering interface management or construction assurance.
Exposure to both engineering design and construction delivery.
Understanding of heavy rail systems, including track, OLE and traction power.
Experience coordinating complex engineering interfaces across multiple contractors and stakeholders.
Interested?
If you have a strong rail systems background, enjoy working across engineering disciplines and have a track record of solving complex technical challenges, I would be keen to hear from you.
