How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    About SmartOn:

SmartOn is a technology company specialising in EPOS, ERP and CRM solutions for hospitality, retail and food & drink businesses.

Unlike many providers, we develop and own our own software platform, allowing us to deliver fully integrated solutions that help businesses streamline operations, improve efficiency and gain greater control over their day-to-day activities.

As we continue to expand across the UK, we are looking for an EPOS Field Technician to join our Sheffield team.

    The Role:
This is a hybrid technical and sales position.

You will be responsible for installing, configuring, maintaining and supporting EPOS systems for our customers, while also actively developing new business and generating your own sales.

As a technician, you will visit customer locations to install equipment, configure systems, troubleshoot technical issues, provide training and support customers.
Alongside your technical responsibilities, you will also have dedicated responsibility for sales. This includes approaching potential customers, identifying new business opportunities, visiting businesses, demonstrating our solutions and managing opportunities through to a completed sale.
Being in the field will naturally create additional sales opportunities, but sales in this role are not limited to existing customers or opportunities discovered during technical visits. We are looking for someone who is willing to actively develop their own customer base alongside their technical work.

    Key Responsibilities
    • Install and configure EPOS hardware and software
    • Install POS terminals, printers, scanners, payment terminals and related equipment
    • Diagnose and resolve hardware, software and connectivity issues
    • Carry out customer maintenance and technical support visits
    • Configure SmartOn systems according to customer requirements
    • Provide customer and staff training
    • Maintain strong relationships with existing customers
    • Actively identify and approach potential new customers
    • Generate new business through field prospecting, networking, referrals and company-generated leads
    • Visit prospective customers and understand their business requirements
    • Conduct on-site and remote product demonstrations
    • Recommend suitable hardware, software and payment solutions
    • Prepare and discuss commercial proposals with prospective customers
    • Manage your own sales opportunities from initial contact through to signed agreement
    • Identify additional sales opportunities while working in the field
    • Work closely with the wider SmartOn team to ensure successful installations and customer onboarding

    Requirements
    • Strong technical understanding of computers, hardware and software
    • Practical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
    • Confidence working directly with customers
    • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
    • Commercial mindset and confidence in actively approaching potential customers
    • Self-motivated and comfortable working independently in the field
    • Organised and capable of managing both technical appointments and sales opportunities
    • Full UK driving licence
    • Based in or around Sheffield
    • Excellent spoken and written English

    Desirable Experience
    • EPOS/POS systems
    • IT support or field technician work
    • Hospitality or retail technology
    • SaaS or subscription-based software
    • Payment processing solutions
    • Computer hardware, printers and networking
    • CRM or ERP platforms
Previous experience combining technical work with sales or business development would be particularly advantageous.

    What We Offer
    • £20,000–£30,000 basic salary + uncapped commission + performance benefits
    • Commission on sales you generate
    • Performance-based bonus programme
    • Clear progression framework with increasing rewards and benefits
    • Company vehicle opportunities linked to performance
    • Monthly performance reviews
    • Marketing-generated leads and sales support
    • Laptop, mobile phone and required technical equipment
    • Full product and industry training
    • Technical and sales training
    • Opportunity to develop both technical and commercial skills
    • Progression into senior technical, sales or management positions
    Why Join SmartOn?

You will have the technical responsibility of installing, maintaining and supporting systems, while also having the opportunity and responsibility to build your own customer base and generate commisions on sales.

Your technical knowledge will allow you to understand a customer's business, demonstrate solutions properly and sell from experience rather than simply from a sales script.

As SmartOn continues to expand across the UK, strong performance in both the technical and commercial sides of the role can lead to greater responsibility, increased earning potential and progression within the company
