How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

An Enhanced DBS check is essential. Applicants must either hold a suitable Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service or be willing to apply for a new Enhanced DBS check.

    Key Responsibilities

    * Carry out daily site inspections to identify maintenance issues and ensure the school premises remain safe and operational.

    * Undertake general building maintenance, minor repairs, basic plumbing, carpentry, decorating and other practical tasks.

    * Maintain school grounds, including lawns, gardens, playgrounds, pathways, entrances and external communal areas.

    * Carry out groundskeeping duties, including grass cutting, weeding, hedge trimming, leaf clearance and general outdoor upkeep, as required.

    * Ensure the school buildings, classrooms, corridors, furniture and equipment are maintained to a high standard.

    * Monitor the condition of the premises and grounds, reporting significant defects or repair requirements promptly.

    * Check doors, windows, gates, fencing and other security features to ensure the site remains secure.

    * Assist with opening and securing the school site in accordance with established procedures.

    * Carry out routine visual checks of fire exits, emergency lighting and other safety-related equipment, reporting any concerns.

    * Support room setups, furniture moves and classroom arrangements when required.

    * Monitor heating, ventilation and water systems, reporting faults to the appropriate person.

    * Assist contractors and maintenance teams with site access and ensure work areas are kept safe.

    * Maintain accurate records of maintenance tasks, inspections and outstanding repairs.

    * Respond promptly to requests from school staff and help resolve day-to-day facilities issues.

    * Follow school health and safety, safeguarding and site management procedures at all times.

    The Ideal Candidate

    The successful candidate will have:

    * Previous experience working as a School Caretaker within a school or educational setting.

    * Strong practical maintenance skills, including experience carrying out general building repairs and routine upkeep.

    * Strong groundskeeping experience, with the ability to maintain outdoor areas, playgrounds, pathways and landscaped spaces.

    * A good understanding of site safety, security and general facilities maintenance.

    * The ability to identify faults, assess maintenance requirements and take appropriate action.

    * A proactive, reliable and flexible approach, with a strong work ethic and attention to detail.

    * The ability to work independently, prioritise tasks and manage daily responsibilities effectively.

    * Good communication skills and the ability to work professionally with school staff and contractors.

    * Basic IT and record-keeping skills.

    Essential Safeguarding Requirements

An Enhanced DBS check is required for this position.

Applicants with an existing Enhanced DBS must have it registered on the DBS Update Service and meet the school's requirements.

Applicants without a suitable Enhanced DBS must be willing to apply for a new check.

Candidates must comply with the school's safeguarding policies and pre-employment screening procedures.

Competitive pay of £16.00–£16.61 per hour, depending on experience.

An immediate start for the successful candidate.

    Full-time, weekday working hours: Monday–Friday, 8:00am–4:00pm.
