Senior Electronics Engineer – Embedded Systems & Instrumentation
Location: Camberley, Surrey
Permanent
Enjoy getting to the heart of complex electronics—and making them better?
We’re recruiting for a specialist technology business seeking a Senior Electronics Engineer to take a leading technical role in developing and improving sophisticated instrumentation.
This is a hands-on opportunity spanning circuit design, embedded software and programmable logic. You’ll combine new development with the challenge of understanding established systems, solving difficult technical problems and turning working prototypes into reliable, manufacturable products.
If you enjoy moving between schematics, source code and the test bench, this role offers plenty of scope to use that breadth.
The role
You’ll take responsibility for electronic systems throughout their development and ongoing improvement. Some projects will involve refining existing designs, where understanding previous engineering decisions is just as important as proposing the next change.
Working alongside hardware, software and manufacturing colleagues, you’ll help ensure products perform consistently, can be tested effectively and are straightforward for other engineers to maintain.
Your responsibilities will include:
*
Designing and improving analogue and digital circuits, with particular attention to power consumption, noise and measurement accuracy.
*
Investigating and modifying embedded C/C++ software and FPGA logic.
*
Developing acquisition and control electronics, including converter interfaces, clocking and synchronisation.
*
Diagnosing faults across hardware, software and connected systems through practical laboratory testing.
*
Using Python to streamline testing, analyse results and automate repetitive engineering tasks.
*
Reviewing schematics and PCB layouts for electrical performance, EMC and ease of manufacture.
*
Developing test equipment and procedures that support repeatable production.
*
Turning existing design information into clear, usable engineering documentation.
*
Providing technical direction during design reviews and helping colleagues resolve challenging issues.
What we’re looking for
You’ll be an experienced electronics engineer who can work independently, make sound technical decisions and see problems through to resolution.
Your background should include:
*
Strong analogue and digital electronics design skills.
*
Experience developing low-power circuits and managing noise in sensitive measurement systems.
*
Confident embedded C/C++ programming, including debugging and adapting unfamiliar code.
*
Substantial experience understanding and modifying FPGA designs.
*
Practical knowledge of ADCs, signal conditioning, sampling and precision measurement.
*
An understanding of clock accuracy, timing behaviour and synchronisation.
*
Familiarity with common interfaces such as SPI, I²C, UART and Ethernet.
*
Python scripting for engineering development or testing.
*
Schematic capture and PCB design experience, ideally using Altium.
*
A methodical approach to bench testing, fault diagnosis and technical documentation.
*
A relevant engineering degree at 2:1 or above.
Additional experience that would be useful
Experience with optical transmitters or receivers, automated production testing, or taking ownership of designs developed by other engineers would be valuable. Postgraduate study in a relevant technical discipline would also be welcome.
Why consider this opportunity?
*
Work across hardware, firmware and programmable logic.
*
Take meaningful technical ownership of complex products.
*
Influence design decisions from early investigation through to manufacture.
*
Apply your expertise to practical engineering challenges where accuracy, efficiency and reliability matter.
*
Provide technical leadership in a hands-on role with no direct reports.
Apply with your CV, highlighting your experience in electronics design, embedded software and FPGA-based systems
