How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Senior Mechanical Engineer

Location: Warrington, Cheshire or Leicester (Hybrid Working)
Job Type: Permanent | Full Time (37 Hours per Week)
    Sector: Nuclear | Mechanical Engineering

    About Westlakes Recruit

Westlakes Recruit is a specialist recruitment partner supporting major programmes across the UK's nuclear, defence and engineering sectors. We are currently recruiting for a Senior Mechanical Engineer on behalf of a leading engineering organisation delivering complex and nationally significant projects within highly regulated environments.

This is an excellent opportunity to join an experienced multidisciplinary engineering team, delivering innovative mechanical engineering solutions across the full project lifecycle while contributing to some of the UK's most strategically important programmes.

    The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer to support the delivery of mechanical engineering activities across a diverse portfolio of nuclear and infrastructure projects.

Working closely with Project Managers, Principal Engineers and multidisciplinary engineering teams, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality engineering solutions, ensuring compliance with industry standards and supporting the successful delivery of projects from concept design through to commissioning and operational support.

Hybrid working is available, with the role based from either Warrington or Leicester.

    Key Responsibilities

You will be responsible for delivering mechanical engineering solutions across all phases of the project lifecycle, including the production, review and approval of engineering calculations, technical reports, design basis documentation, drawings and engineering models.

You will manage assigned engineering work packages, working closely with Project Managers and multidisciplinary teams to achieve project objectives, monitor progress, identify technical risks and support planning, estimating and resource management activities.

You will ensure engineering activities comply with relevant procedures, codes, standards and regulatory requirements, while contributing to Project Safety Assessment, configuration management, design governance and engineering assurance activities.

The role will also involve regular client and stakeholder engagement, participation in technical meetings and design reviews, resolution of technical challenges and the provision of clear engineering advice.

You will work collaboratively across engineering disciplines, share technical knowledge, support junior engineers where appropriate and contribute to the continuous development of engineering capability and best practice across the wider business.

    Essential Requirements

    * Proven experience delivering mechanical engineering solutions within complex engineering environments.

    * Strong understanding of engineering design principles, project delivery and engineering governance.

    * Experience working collaboratively within multidisciplinary project teams and managing a broad range of engineering tasks.

    * Strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively across multiple engineering disciplines.

    * A proactive approach to technical delivery and continuous improvement.

Previous nuclear experience is not essential. We welcome applications from engineers working across sectors including defence, aerospace, oil & gas, energy, utilities, manufacturing, rail, marine, industrial process and other highly regulated industries.

    Qualifications

    * HNC or HND in Mechanical Engineering (minimum), or equivalent engineering qualification and relevant industry experience.

    * Degree-qualified candidates or those working towards Chartered Engineer status are encouraged to apply.

    Security Requirements

Due to the nature of the projects, successful applicants must be eligible to obtain and maintain UK Security Check (SC) clearance.

    What's on Offer

    * Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package.

    * Flexible hybrid working arrangements.

    * Opportunity to work on nationally significant nuclear and defence programmes.

    * Structured career development and clear progression to Principal Engineer and Technical Lead positions.

    * Payment of professional membership fees and support towards professional registration.

    * Generous annual leave, matched pension contributions and life assurance.

    * Digital GP services, annual health checks and wellbeing support.

    * Employee share scheme, shopping discounts, holiday trading and paid volunteering day.

    * Employee Assistance Programme supporting physical, mental and financial wellbeing.

    Why Apply?

The UK nuclear sector is experiencing unprecedented investment across defence, decommissioning, new nuclear and clean energy programmes, creating exceptional long-term opportunities for experienced mechanical engineers.

This role offers the opportunity to work on technically complex and rewarding projects while developing your expertise within a collaborative engineering environment. Whether you're already working within the nuclear industry or looking to transition from another highly regulated sector, you'll have the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to projects of national importance.
