How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Quantity Surveyor
    Exeter
    Main Contractor
A well-established and highly regarded main contractor is looking to appoint an experienced Quantity Surveyor to join its commercial team in Devon.

This is an excellent opportunity for a commercially astute Quantity Surveyor to take ownership of their own projects and play a key role in the successful delivery of a diverse portfolio of construction schemes. Working closely with project and operational teams, you will manage the commercial and contractual aspects of projects from pre-construction through to completion and final account.

The business delivers projects across a range of sectors, including education, healthcare, industrial, commercial and leisure, with project values typically reaching £20 million.

    The Role
As Quantity Surveyor, you will be responsible for the commercial management of allocated projects, ensuring effective financial control, strong commercial performance and compliance with contractual obligations throughout the project lifecycle.

    Key Responsibilities

Manage the commercial and financial performance of construction projects.
Prepare and monitor cost reports, forecasts and Cost Value Reconciliations.
Manage project budgets, expenditure and cash flow.
Lead subcontractor procurement, tender evaluations, negotiations and appointments.
Manage subcontractor accounts, including valuations, payments, variations and final accounts.
Prepare and submit applications for payment, ensuring effective cash recovery.
Identify, assess and agree variations, compensation events, claims and additional payments, as applicable to the contract.
Work closely with site and project teams to ensure contractual requirements are understood and met.
Monitor progress against programme and assess the commercial implications of delays or changes.
Identify opportunities to improve project margins, maximise value and achieve cost efficiencies.
Maintain accurate commercial records and ensure reporting systems are kept up to date.
Liaise with clients, consultants, subcontractors and other stakeholders on commercial matters.
Support the commercial awareness and development of colleagues within the wider project team.
Manage the commercial close-out of projects, including final accounts and reconciliation of costs and value.
    About You
The successful candidate will have previous experience as a Quantity Surveyor within a main contractor environment, with the ability to manage projects independently and take responsibility for their commercial performance.

You will be commercially driven, analytical and well organised, with strong contractual knowledge and the confidence to build effective relationships with project teams, clients and the supply chain.

    You will have:

Experience independently managing your own construction projects.
Experience working on two-stage procurement projects.
Experience delivering projects across sectors such as education, healthcare, industrial, commercial or leisure.
Experience working on construction schemes valued between £10 million and £30 million.
A strong understanding of construction methods, procurement and commercial management.
Experience managing interim valuations, cost reports, subcontractor accounts and final accounts.
Strong knowledge of contractual processes, variations and change management.
A good understanding of project cost reporting, forecasting and cash flow.
Experience using commercial and financial systems.
A degree, HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in Quantity Surveying or a related commercial discipline.
RICS membership would be advantageous but is not essential.
    The Opportunity
This is an excellent opportunity to join an established construction business with a strong pipeline of work across Devon and the wider Southwest.

You'll be part of a collaborative and supportive commercial team, with the autonomy to manage your own projects, contribute to commercial decision-making and continue developing your career within a progressive and successful contractor.
