About the Role
This role provides facility-based metrology and inspection support, ensuring customer components and equipment are programmed, measured, and verified safely, accurately, and in accordance with authorized competence, approved procedures, and ISO/IEC 17025 quality requirements. You will deliver a professional, technically competent service using CMM and dimensional metrology systems, operating with the autonomy expected at either Technician or Engineer level while maintaining strong direct interaction with clients.
Key Responsibilities
CMM Programming & Metrology: Develop, modify, validate, and optimize CMM measurement programs, datum structures, fixturing, and probing methodologies (e.g., PC-DMIS, MCOSMOS, MODUS).
Inspection & Quality Control: Perform high-precision dimensional inspections using CMMs, portable metrology systems, laser scanners, and CAD models against complex engineering drawings and GD&T requirements.
Customer Interaction & Support: Maintain strong direct communication with customers to clarify technical specifications, explain measurement results, and discuss inspection outcomes.
Quality & Compliance: Execute work within ISO/IEC 17025 and UKAS-accredited environments. Maintain measurement traceability, prepare inspection reports and calibration certificates, manage non-conformities, and support internal/UKAS audits.
Data Analysis & Continuous Improvement: Evaluate measurement capability, uncertainty, and dimensional trends to support root-cause investigations. Drive first-time-right principles, procedure development, and efficiency improvements.
Team Guidance: Provide technical mentoring, guidance, and coaching to Calibration Technicians, Operators, and Apprentices.
Candidate Requirements
Qualifications: HNC / HND / NVQ Level 4 or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Metrology (or recognized Engineering Apprenticeship). Certifications in PC-DMIS/MCOSMOS/MODUS or ISO GPS/GD&T are desirable.
Experience: Minimum 3 years’ experience in precision dimensional metrology or inspection, with a proven track record of developing CMM programs. Background working in an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited environment is essential. Experience in Aerospace, Defence, Automotive, or Medical sectors is advantageous.
Skills: Expert knowledge of engineering drawings and GD&T (BS EN ISO 1101 / ASME Y14.5). Excellent verbal and written communication skills for customer-facing technical discussions. Familiarity with FAIR/PPAP processes and ERP/calibration software (e.g., IndySoft, MetCal) is desirable.
