How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Embedded Software / Firmware Engineer – C++ / Rust

    Location: Farnborough, Hampshire
Working Arrangement: Fully onsite, 5 days per week, with flexible start and finish times
Security Clearance: Must be eligible for SC and DV clearance

    The Opportunity

Are you an Embedded Software or Firmware Engineer with strong C++ skills and experience in Rust development? Are you looking to work on innovative, technically challenging projects where your software expertise contributes to the development of advanced, security-critical technologies?

We are seeking talented engineers to join a multidisciplinary engineering team developing specialist solutions for demanding defence and communications applications. This is an opportunity to work across the full development lifecycle, from early-stage research, prototyping and experimentation through to the development of production-ready products.

The team values creative thinking, technical curiosity and a willingness to explore new technologies. You will have the opportunity to tackle complex engineering challenges, develop new capabilities and contribute to projects with real-world national security applications.

This role is particularly suited to engineers with hands-on embedded C++ experience, alongside an interest in or practical experience with Rust.

    Key Responsibilities

Design, develop and maintain embedded software and firmware using C++ and, where applicable, Rust.

Develop software for embedded platforms, including embedded Linux and bare-metal microcontrollers.

Contribute to the design, prototyping, testing and validation of new technologies and engineering solutions.

Work collaboratively with software, FPGA and hardware engineers to deliver integrated solutions.

Investigate complex technical problems and develop innovative approaches to overcome engineering challenges.

Contribute throughout the software development lifecycle, from initial concept and feasibility studies through to product development.

Explore emerging technologies and identify opportunities to improve performance, reliability and capability.

Ensure software development meets the required security, quality and engineering standards.

    Essential Skills and Experience

Strong software development experience in C++, ideally within an embedded software or firmware environment.

Experience with Rust, or a strong interest and demonstrable ability to develop expertise in the language.

Experience developing software for embedded systems, microcontrollers or resource-constrained platforms.

Knowledge of embedded Linux, bare-metal development or low-level software engineering.

Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work through complex technical challenges.

A proactive approach to learning, experimentation and developing new technologies.

A degree in an engineering, mathematical or scientific discipline, or equivalent practical experience.

    Working Arrangements

Five days per week onsite in Farnborough, Hampshire, working closely with a multidisciplinary engineering team.

Flexible start and finish times to support a degree of flexibility around the working day.

A collaborative engineering environment focused on technical innovation, experimentation and continuous development.

    Security Requirements

Due to the nature of the projects, applicants must be British citizens and meet the residency requirements to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance.

Candidates must be eligible for Security Check (SC) clearance and subsequently Developed Vetting (DV) clearance. Typically, this requires five years of UK residency for SC and ten years for DV, subject to the relevant UK Security Vetting requirements.

    Interested?

If you are an Embedded Software or Firmware Engineer with strong C++ skills and an interest in Rust, and you want to work on challenging technologies within a specialist engineering environment, we would welcome a conversation.

Apply today to find out more about the opportunity and the technical challenges involved.
