What You’ll Do
The role will involve providing one-to-one and personalised support to students with disabilities and additional learning needs, including students with visual impairment.
You will work alongside students and college staff to identify and reduce barriers to learning, helping learners access teaching, learning resources, campus facilities and wider college life as independently as possible.
• Provide personalised academic and pastoral support to students
• Support students with visual impairment to access lessons, learning materials and college activities

• Work closely with teaching teams to ensure students stay engaged and on track
• Support young people and adults with a range of needs in and out of the classroom
• Create a positive, encouraging, and inclusive learning environment
The emphasis is on promoting independence rather than creating dependence. Academic Support Coaches encourage students to develop the skills, confidence and strategies they need to manage their learning as independently as possible.
What You’ll Bring
We are looking for someone who:
* Has experience supporting disabled people, students, learners, young people or individuals with additional needs
* Has an understanding of, or willingness to learn about, visual impairment and sight loss
* Is patient, empathetic, respectful and understanding
* Has excellent communication and interpersonal skills
* Can recognise individual needs and adapt their approach accordingly
* Is confident providing one-to-one support
* Can build positive, professional and trusting relationships
* Has a calm, consistent and encouraging approach
* Is organised, reliable and able to use initiative
* Is comfortable working collaboratively with teaching and support professionals
* Is committed to promoting independence, inclusion, equality and student wellbeing
* Understands the importance of safeguarding and maintaining professional boundaries
Experience of working with visual impairment, assistive technology, accessibility software or disability support would be advantageous.
✨ Why Choose This Path?
As an Academic Support Coach, you will have the opportunity to provide consistent, encouraging and individualised support that helps students access education and develop the skills and confidence they need to become increasingly independent.
You will help students to:
* Access teaching and learning more confidently
* Overcome barriers associated with visual impairment and other support needs
* Develop greater independence
* Build self-confidence and resilience
* Develop effective study and organisational skills
* Use appropriate accessibility tools and strategies
