How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Vertical Recruitment is working with an established structural and civil engineering consultancy to recruit a Structural Engineer for its Manchester office.

    This is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious engineer with at least three years’ experience to take the next step in their career, working on a diverse range of projects across multiple sectors.

    The consultancy offers a collaborative working environment, with the opportunity to take ownership of projects, develop client relationships and work alongside experienced engineers and technical leaders. You will benefit from ongoing mentorship and support towards Chartered status, with the opportunity to develop your technical expertise and progress your career.

    Located in central Manchester, offering a modern working environment in the heart of the city.

    The Role

    You will contribute to the delivery of structural and civil engineering projects, taking responsibility for your own designs, calculations and project deliverables, while working closely with senior engineers and technicians.

    Key responsibilities will include:

    * Developing structural and civil engineering designs across various project stages.

    * Preparing structural calculations, including load takedowns and the design of individual structural elements.

    * Applying structural stability principles and developing appropriate engineering solutions.

    * Producing sketches, diagrams and technical information to communicate design concepts.

    * Coordinating design information with technicians and other engineering disciplines.

    * Managing drafting work and reviewing technical deliverables to ensure accuracy and quality.

    * Attending client meetings, design reviews and project coordination meetings.

    * Preparing structural engineering reports, specifications and technical documentation.

    * Undertaking site visits during construction and reporting on progress and technical matters.

    * Managing multiple projects, ensuring delivery against programme deadlines, budgets and agreed scopes.

    * Identifying design risks and contributing to risk assessments and construction planning.

    * Providing guidance and technical support to graduate and junior engineers.

    * Maintaining quality assurance procedures and ensuring all work is appropriately reviewed.

    About You

    We are interested in speaking with engineers who are keen to develop their technical capabilities, take greater ownership of projects and progress towards Chartered status.

    You will ideally have:

    * A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.

    * A minimum of three years' relevant consultancy experience.

    * Graduate membership of the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) or Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).

    * Experience working towards Chartered Engineer status, with a commitment to continued professional development.

    * Experience developing structural designs, preparing calculations and delivering project work.

    * The ability to manage projects and deliver work with a good degree of autonomy.

    * Strong communication skills and the confidence to liaise with clients and other design team members.

    * A proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.

    * An understanding of project budgets, timescales, quality assurance and health and safety requirements.

    * The right to work in the UK.

    A full UK driving licence would be advantageous but is not essential. Flexibility to travel to project sites and meetings when required is expected.

    Software Experience

    Experience with relevant structural design and drafting software is desirable, including:

    * AutoCAD

    * Revit

    * Bluebeam

    * Tekla TEDDS

    * Tekla Structures

    * Chorus

    Why This Opportunity?

    Joining a medium-sized consultancy offers the opportunity to become involved in projects from initial concept through to detailed design and construction, gaining valuable experience across the full project lifecycle.

    You will work alongside experienced engineering professionals, benefit from direct mentorship and have the opportunity to develop your technical and project management skills in a supportive environment.

    With a varied project portfolio, a collaborative team culture and a clear focus on professional development, this is an excellent opportunity for a Structural Engineer looking to build their career and work towards Chartership.
