How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    You will like

Working as a Site Operative / Construction Operative for an innovative and growing specialist engineering company based near Newton Abbot, South Devon. This established organisation delivers fascinating civil engineering, mechanical installation and environmental infrastructure projects across the UK and internationally.

You will join a friendly, collaborative team of engineers and technical specialists delivering practical solutions that make a genuine difference to the environment. With specialist training, excellent development opportunities and a clear route towards Site Supervisor, this is a great opportunity for an ambitious, hands-on engineering or construction professional.

The role could also particularly suit ex-forces personnel, military engineers, service leavers and veterans with transferable practical engineering, construction or maintenance experience.

    You will like

The Site Operative / Engineering Installation Operative job itself, where you will undertake practical assembly, installation and construction activities both in the workshop and on project sites.

Working on specialist river infrastructure, environmental engineering and mechanical installation projects, you will develop valuable technical skills while contributing to sustainable engineering solutions. More specifically:

Assemble and install fabricated metalwork and structural components on and off site.

Undertake mechanical installation, construction and engineering assembly activities.

Set out and install fabricated components and specialist engineering structures.

Operate power tools and equipment, including concrete cutting, drilling, hot works and 110V equipment.

Complete minor concrete works, including formwork and associated construction activities.

Drill and install mechanical and chemical anchors and fixings.

Install access systems, including handrails, fixed ladders and associated metalwork.

Work safely on construction sites, including projects near rivers and watercourses.

Collaborate with engineers, supervisors and other construction professionals.

Travel to project locations across the UK, including periods working away from home.

    You will have

To succeed as a Site Operative / Construction Engineering Operative, you will ideally have practical experience in construction, mechanical installation, engineering maintenance or fabrication. You will also bring:

Ideally 3–5 years' experience in construction, engineering, maintenance or installation operations.

Practical experience using hand tools, power tools and site equipment.

Some exposure to civil, structural or mechanical engineering projects.

Good attention to detail and an understanding of safe working practices.

Ability to follow technical instructions and engineering standards.

Basic IT skills and willingness to learn new systems and techniques.

A positive attitude, practical problem-solving skills and a willingness to travel.

Qualifications such as an NVQ Level 3 in Engineering Maintenance, Mechanical Manufacturing or Construction Operations, or an HNC in Civil/Mechanical Engineering, would be advantageous but are not essential.

Applications from ex-military personnel are particularly welcome, including candidates with experience in the Royal Engineers, REME, military maintenance, mechanical engineering, field engineering or construction operations.

An interest in rivers, conservation, sustainability or environmental engineering would be a bonus. Specialist training will be provided.

    You will get

As a Site Operative / Engineering Construction Operative, you will enjoy a competitive salary and an attractive employment package including:

    £28,000–£35,000 salary, depending on experience.

    Annual performance bonus.

    Company pension scheme.

    Specialist technical training and mentoring.

Professional development and engineering skills training.

Clear career progression towards Site Supervisor and beyond.

    Supportive, collaborative working environment.

Interesting and varied engineering projects with genuine environmental benefits.

Macstaff is a proud signatory to the Armed Forces Covenant, recognising the valuable skills, experience and commitment of serving personnel, veterans and military families. We actively encourage applications from service leavers, veterans and reservists with relevant transferable skills.

This is an excellent opportunity to build a rewarding career in specialist civil engineering, mechanical installation and sustainable infrastructure.
