Winchester | Salary dependent on experience
We are recruiting for a Principal Mechanical Engineer to join our clients engineering team in Winchester.
This is a technically demanding role combining mechanical system design, engineering analysis and direct customer interaction. You will take technical ownership of engineering solutions from initial proposal and concept development through to prototyping, testing and Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT).
A key part of the role will be understanding customer requirements and explaining technical solutions clearly. You will need the confidence to discuss system performance, justify engineering decisions and guide customers towards practical, commercially sound solutions.
Reporting to the Senior Engineering & Technical Manager, you will work closely with customers, suppliers and internal colleagues throughout the product lifecycle.
The role
*
Lead technical discussions with customers to understand their requirements, clarify specifications and explain proposed engineering solutions.
*
Prepare and review technical proposals against customer specifications and relevant international standards, including ISO and ASME.
*
Develop mechanical systems from concept through to prototyping, product testing and FAT.
*
Undertake complex engineering calculations and produce clear technical reports, explaining findings and recommendations.
*
Apply your knowledge of centrifugal and plunger pumps, electrical drives, jet eductor mixing systems and fluid flow in piping systems.
*
Work with suppliers to select components that meet technical and application requirements.
*
Identify design improvements that enhance quality, performance and efficiency while managing costs.
*
Plan and coordinate engineering work to meet agreed timescales, standards and budgets.
*
Provide technical leadership and guidance to colleagues.
What we’re looking for
*
A degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent qualification.
*
Substantial relevant engineering experience, with the ability to take ownership of complex technical work.
*
Strong working knowledge of centrifugal and plunger pumps, electrical drives and standalone delivery systems.
*
Understanding of jet eductor mixing systems and fluid flow in piping.
*
Knowledge of relevant engineering standards, including ISO and ASME.
*
Experience working directly with customers, discussing technical requirements and explaining engineering decisions.
*
Strong analytical skills, attention to detail and a methodical approach.
*
Commercial awareness of project costs, materials and component selection.
Experience with fluid spraying systems, nozzles and droplet formation would be advantageous, as would hands-on experience with CAD, 3D modelling, CFD or FEA.
This opportunity would suit an established Principal or Lead Engineer, or an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer ready to take on greater technical responsibility and a more prominent customer-facing role.
