How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Mobile Mechanical Maintenance Engineer

    £35,000–£39,000 Basic Salary | £45,000–£50,000+ Potential Earnings

Company Vehicle | Overtime Opportunities | Paid Travel Time (subject to confirmation) | Specialist Training

Location: Oxford, Reading, Swindon, Milton Keynes, Newbury or surrounding areas

Coverage: M4/M40 corridor, Birmingham, Bristol, West London and occasional South Wales

Work on something a little different from your typical maintenance job.

Are you a mechanically minded Maintenance Engineer looking for more variety, greater independence and the opportunity to develop your skills working with specialist engineering systems?

We're recruiting for an established, highly respected engineering business specialising in the design, installation and maintenance of advanced controlled-environment facilities.

These aren't your typical commercial buildings.

We're talking specialist research facilities, university laboratories, environmental chambers, high-tech greenhouses and climate-controlled environments where precision engineering is essential.

From temperature and humidity control to pumps, ventilation, mechanical systems and building controls, you'll be working with a genuinely interesting mix of equipment and technology.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone from a mechanical maintenance, HVAC, building services or facilities engineering background who enjoys hands-on engineering, solving problems and working independently.

You don't need to know everything from day one. The company provides specialist training and is far more interested in finding a capable, mechanically minded engineer with the right attitude than someone who ticks every box.

    The opportunity

You'll become part of a specialist engineering team responsible for keeping technically advanced facilities operating reliably and efficiently.

Working across an established network of client sites, you'll carry out planned maintenance, inspections, fault-finding and occasional commissioning support.

This is a mobile position, giving you the freedom and variety of working at different locations rather than being tied to the same factory or building every day.

You'll be trusted to organise your work, communicate directly with clients and take ownership of the maintenance activities you're responsible for.

    What you'll be doing

    *

Carrying out planned preventative maintenance across specialist mechanical and environmental control systems.

    *

Inspecting and maintaining pumps, pipework, valves and associated equipment.

    *

Checking water flow rates, system performance and operating conditions.

    *

Inspecting ventilation and air-handling equipment, including filter replacements.

    *

Checking alarms, monitoring systems and building management controls.

    *

Diagnosing mechanical faults and supporting repairs to minimise equipment downtime.

    *

Undertaking basic electrical checks and testing where appropriately trained and competent.

    *

Supporting testing and commissioning activities on newly installed systems.

    *

Producing straightforward maintenance reports and communicating findings to clients and the engineering team.

    What we're looking for

We're particularly interested in speaking with engineers who have a solid mechanical foundation and enjoy a varied, hands-on role.

    Your background could be in:

    *

    Mechanical maintenance or multi-skilled engineering

    *

    HVAC, ventilation or air-handling systems

    *

    Building services or facilities maintenance

    *

    Pumps, pipework or fluid-handling systems

    *

    Industrial or commercial plant maintenance

    *

    Field service engineering

    Ideally, you'll bring:

    *

Practical experience maintaining or fault-finding on mechanical equipment.

    *

A working understanding of pumps, pipework, ventilation or similar systems.

    *

Confidence working independently and dealing directly with customers.

    *

    A proactive approach to problem-solving.

    *

A full UK driving licence and willingness to travel between sites.

Previous experience with BMS systems, particularly Trend, would be beneficial, but isn't essential.

Likewise, you don't need to be a qualified installation electrician. This position has a much stronger mechanical emphasis, with electrical knowledge useful rather than the main focus.

If you're a good mechanical engineer who wants to learn something new, we'd be keen to hear from you.

    What's on offer?

    *

£35,000–£39,000 basic salary, depending on experience.

    *

Potential total earnings of £45,000–£50,000+, subject to the agreed overtime and travel payment arrangements.

    *

Company vehicle provided for travelling between client sites.

    *

Opportunities to increase earnings through additional hours, subject to availability.

    *

Specialist training on advanced environmental control and engineering systems.

    *

Exposure to interesting, bespoke equipment and technology.

    *

A varied, field-based role with genuine independence and responsibility.

    *

40-hour working week, with flexibility around site visits.

    *

20 days' annual leave plus bank holidays and the Christmas/New Year shutdown, subject to confirmation.

    *

The opportunity to develop long-term expertise in a highly specialised area of engineering.

    Why consider this opportunity?

This isn't another repetitive maintenance position where you'll spend every day looking after the same handful of machines.

You'll be joining a specialist business delivering engineering solutions for scientific research, horticulture and technically demanding controlled environments.

You'll get the chance to work across different sites, build knowledge of unique systems and become a valued technical specialist within a niche engineering sector.

For someone who enjoys the practical side of engineering but wants more variety, independence and the potential to increase their earnings, it's an opportunity well worth exploring.

    Interested?

Apply today or get in touch for a confidential conversation. We're happy to speak with engineers from a range of mechanical backgrounds, even if you haven't previously worked with controlled-environment systems
