How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Structural Engineer
    Leeds with Hybrid Working
    Building Structures Team

A few years into your Structural Engineering career and starting to think about what comes next?

You've probably reached the point where you're comfortable with the fundamentals, you've worked on a decent variety of projects and you're starting to take on more responsibility. But there's still plenty you want to learn, particularly when it comes to running your own projects, dealing directly with clients and working towards Chartership.

If that sounds about right, this could be a really good next move.

I'm working with an established multidisciplinary consultancy in Leeds that's looking to bring another Structural Engineer into its buildings team. They're particularly interested in someone with around 3-5 years' experience who's developed a good technical foundation and now wants the opportunity to build on it.

The attraction here is the balance between independence and support. You'll be trusted to get on with your own design work, encouraged to take ownership of smaller projects and given the opportunity to get more involved in the wider delivery process. Equally, you'll have experienced Senior and Chartered Engineers around you who can offer guidance, review your work and help you develop.

It's the sort of environment where you can start making that transition from being an Engineer who contributes to projects to someone who's increasingly confident taking responsibility for delivering them.

What would you be working on?
There's a good variety of building structures work, covering both new-build developments and refurbishment projects across different sectors.
You'll get involved in the design of steel and reinforced concrete structures, including multi-storey frames, steel portal frames and more traditional building structures.
Day to day, that means producing structural calculations and designs, working alongside technicians and other engineering disciplines, attending design meetings and gradually getting more exposure to clients and the commercial side of projects.
Importantly, you won't just be sitting behind a screen producing calculations all day. There's an opportunity to see how your designs develop, understand the decisions being made around them and become more involved in projects from concept through to construction.

    Who would suit this?
You'll ideally be working as a Structural Engineer within a UK consultancy, with a good grounding in building structures and experience designing in both steel and reinforced concrete.
You'll have a sound understanding of Eurocodes and UK design standards, be comfortable producing your own calculations and designs, and enjoy getting stuck into the technical challenges that come with different projects.
You don't need to have all the answers, though. What's more important is that you're technically curious, willing to learn and keen to take on greater responsibility, whether that's managing smaller projects, getting more involved with clients or developing your own design solutions.
An interest in working towards IStructE or ICE chartership would also be welcomed. You'll have experienced Chartered Engineers around you who are happy to share their knowledge, offer guidance and help you develop your skills and confidence as you progress.

    Why is it worth considering?
Aside from the projects and the chance to develop, there are some genuine benefits to joining this particular consultancy. It's a well-established business with a strong reputation across the built environment, meaning you'll have access to the expertise and resources of a larger organisation while still being part of a local engineering team.

There's also a clear opportunity to progress. Whether your immediate ambition is to become a more rounded Structural Engineer, achieve chartership or eventually move into a Senior Engineer position, there's a route to develop without feeling like you need to change employers every couple of years.

The package is attractive too, including:

    Hybrid and flexible working arrangements
25 days' annual leave, with options to buy, sell or carry over holiday
Private medical insurance and access to a private GP
Pension, life assurance and income protection
    Performance-related bonus opportunities
Three paid volunteering days each year
Structured career development and support towards chartership
Additional wellbeing benefits and discounted gym membership
If you're a Structural Engineer in Leeds and you're beginning to wonder whether your current role is giving you the development, responsibility and opportunities you need, I'd be happy to tell you more -

You don't need to be actively looking. Sometimes it's just worth finding out what else is available and how it compares with where you are now.
