How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Cambridge City Council
    Location: Cambridge, CB2 1BY
    Contract: 12 months
    Rate: £31.45 per hour PAYE
    Working Arrangement: Hybrid

    Role Overview

    Cambridge City Council is seeking an experienced Senior Technical Officer to join its Environmental Health service on a 12-month contract.

    The successful candidate will carry out the full range of Senior Technical Officer duties, from basic investigations and inspections through to complex cases, within an assigned specialist work area. Areas may include Commercial & Licensing, Residential, or Environmental Quality & Growth.

    You will act as a specialist lead within your area, providing technical expertise, making complex decisions, undertaking enforcement action where required, and supporting colleagues across the service.

    Key Responsibilities

    Undertake inspections, investigations and casework ranging from routine matters to complex cases within the assigned work area.
    Act as the specialist technical lead, providing advice and support to colleagues, students, contractors and other staff.
    Inspect the assigned district and maintain an up-to-date understanding of relevant environmental health circumstances.
    Requirements

    Strong experience working within Environmental Health or a closely related technical regulatory service.
    Experience undertaking inspections, investigations and complex casework.
    Strong knowledge of relevant environmental health legislation, enforcement procedures and statutory requirements.
    Experience making enforcement decisions and taking appropriate informal or formal action.
    Ability to analyse complex issues, problem solve and make sound professional decisions.
    Experience preparing reports, statements of evidence and other formal documentation.
    Ability to provide specialist technical advice and support to colleagues.
    Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to liaise with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
