How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    The Opportunity
Acivico Building Consultancy is seeking an experienced Building Control leader to head its Community Team, delivering building control services across Birmingham.

Acivico Group is a purpose-led, multi-disciplinary organisation based in Birmingham, providing services across the built environment, including design and construction, building control and facilities management. Since 2012, its vision has been to promote public wellbeing and sustainable development through its #BuildingForGood approach.

Acivico Building Consultancy provides Building Control services for Birmingham City Council, the largest local authority in the country, while also working with major retail and commercial clients through Acivico's Registered Building Control Approver service.

The successful candidate will lead a team of approximately 10–11 Registered Building Inspectors, overseeing domestic, residential and smaller commercial projects. This is a hands-on leadership role focused on supervision, technical review and sign-off, ensuring work progresses efficiently while maintaining high professional and regulatory standards.

The role also provides wider senior leadership exposure, including deputising for the Director of Building Consultancy and covering for the Associate Director responsible for Major Projects when required.

    Key Responsibilities
Lead, stabilise and motivate the Community Building Control team.
Build strong relationships with team members and bring people with you through change.
Supervise, review and sign off building control work, with cases subject to internal audit.
Deliver against Birmingham City Council service requirements and national operational standards.
Work with the Director of Building Consultancy on annual budgets, fee-setting and monthly monitoring of income and performance.
Lead recruitment activity, with a focus on replacing contractors with permanent employees and building a stable long-term team.
Support and develop trainees, including new LABC trainees joining the service.
Help shape the replacement of the organisation's database and site notes system.
Build effective relationships with local designers, contractors and other regional authorities.
Review policies and procedures alongside the Building Consultancy administration team.
Deputise for the Director of Building Consultancy when required.
Provide leadership cover for the Major Projects team. About You
Acivico is looking for a hands-on Building Control leader with genuine technical and professional credibility.

    You should have:

Registered Building Inspector status at Class 2 A–F or Class 3, combined with Class 4 (Technical Manager) registration.
Experience within local authority and/or private practice or approved inspector Building Control, ideally with experience across both environments.
Strong technical and professional credibility, with the confidence to supervise work and see cases through to completion.
Proven experience leading, motivating and developing a team.
Commercial awareness, including understanding of fees, budgets and performance management.
The ambition to progress and help shape the future of a growing Building Control service.
A genuine interest in developing people and building a permanent, high-performing team.
A full driving licence and access to a vehicle insured for business use. Why Join Acivico?

    Leadership Exposure
Lead the Community Team delivering Building Control services for Birmingham City Council. You will contribute to annual budgets and fee-setting recommendations, monitor income and performance, and gain regular exposure to senior management and the board when deputising for the Director.

    The Chance to Build
Acivico is replacing its database and site notes system, providing an opportunity to influence and shape new ways of working. You will also lead recruitment and help build a stable permanent team while supporting the next generation of Building Control professionals.

    A Supportive Team
The Community Team is established and close-knit, with experienced inspectors who understand Birmingham's diverse building stock and client base. The team values leaders who demonstrate strong technical and professional credibility.

    Respected Management
The Director of Building Consultancy has extensive experience across local authority and private sector Building Control, as well as professional-body experience. The successful candidate will work closely with him as part of the senior leadership team.

    Purpose and Variety
Community Building Control directly contributes to the safety and wellbeing of people across Birmingham. The city provides a constant flow of domestic, residential and community projects, alongside exposure to significant regional schemes.

    Stability and Development
Acivico is wholly owned by Birmingham City Council, with surplus generated by the business returning to the community. The role offers an opportunity to help shape the future of the service, with potential longer-term progression towards Director level as the organisation develops.

    Flexible Working
The role is typically based in Birmingham one day per week, with the remainder worked from home. Acivico also supports flexible working and recognises the importance of commitments outside work.
    Remuneration and Benefits
    £68,000–£88,000 annual salary.
30 days' annual leave, increasing to 33 and then 35 days, plus bank holidays.
Local Government Pension Scheme through the West Midlands Pension Fund.
Continuity of service for eligible local authority joiners.
Recognition of previous local authority service.
Hybrid working, typically one day per week in Birmingham.
    Flexi-time currently in operation.
    Payment of professional fees.
Significant investment in learning and development.
    Life assurance.
    Employee assistance programme.
    Retail discounts.
    Volunteering opportunities.
Supportive approach to caring and family commitments. About Acivico
Acivico Group is a Birmingham-based, purpose-led organisation providing multi-disciplinary built environment services. Established in 2012, the organisation works across design and construction, Building Control and facilities management.

Acivico's sole shareholder is Birmingham City Council, with the organisation's wider purpose centred on promoting public wellbeing and sustainable development.

This is a retained recruitment assignment being exclusively handled by Joshua Robert Recruitment. All third-party applications, CVs and candidate introductions will be forwarded to Joshua Robert for review and management.
