How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Role summary

The Shop Assistant helps run one of our stores in Denbigh, Hull or Shrewsbury day to day: serving parents and pupils, keeping the shop stocked and tidy, and making sure every paid order reaches the customer. You are the face of School Shop Direct in your town, and the first point of contact for families buying school uniform.
The role is busiest from mid-July to mid-September, when back-to-school demand peaks. Outside that period the pace is steadier and hours flex to match. You may occasionally beasked to cover at another store when the business needs it.

    Key responsibilities
    Shop floor and customer service

    * Open and close the store on time, following security procedures

    * Serve customers, help with sizing and fitting, and advise on each school's uniform requirements

    * Handle enquiries, exchanges and refunds in line with company policy

    * Resolve everyday customer issues and escalate complaints to the Area Supervisor

    Orders and collections

    * Process in-store sales and customer orders accurately on the company system

    * Track outstanding paid orders and keep customers updated on delivery or collection dates

    * Prepare orders for collection and contact customers when they are ready

    * Support pick, pack and dispatch of online and school orders when needed

    Stock

    * Receive deliveries and check them against paperwork

    * Keep shelves, rails and stockroom organised and replenished

    * Carry out stock takes and reconcile stock and orders on the system when asked

    * Report low stock, shortages and damaged items to the Area Supervisor promptly

    Tills and cash

    * Operate the till and card terminal; balance takings at the end of each day

    * Follow cash-handling, banking and security procedures

    Store standards

    * Keep the shop clean, safe and well presented

    * Follow health and safety, fire and data protection procedures

    * Carry out any other reasonable duties requested by management

    Hours,flexibility and peak season
You are guaranteed a minimum of 3 days per week. Additional days are offered by
agreement or as business needs require, up to full-time.

    * Working days and hours are set by the company in line with business need, with reasonable notice

    * Store opening hours may include Saturdays

    * From 15 July to 15 September (the back-to-school peak), availability requirements increase: longer hours, extra days and weekend working, including some Sundays, may be required

    * Outside the peak, days may be reduced towards the 3-day minimum when trade is quieter

    Annual leave and Christmas shutdown
Holiday entitlement is 5.6 weeks per year (including bank holidays), pro-rated to the days you work.

    * No annual leave from 1 July to 30 September. This is the business's busiest period and all staff are needed.

    * Christmas shutdown. The business closes from the day before Christmas Eve (23 December) and reopens on the first working day in January. You do not have to use annual leave to cover the shutdown, but you may choose to book annual leave for those days if you wish. Shutdown days not covered by annual leave are unpaid.

    * All other leave must be requested in advance and approved by the Area Supervisor.

    Pay, probation and generalterms

    * Pay: £12.71 per hour for hours worked (or the National Living Wage, if higher), paid monthly in arrears

    * Probation: 6 months, with 1 week's notice on either side during probation

    * Sick pay: Statutory Sick Pay only, subject to the usual eligibility rules; absence must be reported to the Area Supervisor before your shift starts

    * Pension: auto-enrolment into the workplace pension where eligible

    * Right to work: the offer is subject to proof of the right to work in the UK

    * Full terms will be set out in the written statement of employment particulars
