How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

Do you love creating delicious food and bringing new ideas to life?
    Lead Chef
    Salary: £15 per hour
Hours: Full time, 37 hours per week
    Contract: Permanent
Location: Land of Oak and Iron Heritage Centre, Winlaton Mill, Gateshead, NE21
    About Us
Operated by Groundwork North East & Cumbria, a charity committed to creating stronger, greener and healthier communities, our Heritage Centre is set within the beautiful steep-sided Derwent Valley, with an abundance of natural woodland, rare and iconic wildlife and a hidden heritage of British sword making and a world leading iron and steel industry.
Our modern café is the perfect place to fuel up before or relax after a day of exploring. From hearty breakfasts and seasonal lunches to delicious home-bakes, all made with locally sourced ingredients, there’s something to suit all tastes.
    About the Role
We're looking for a talented Lead Chef to join our café at the beautiful Land of Oak & Iron Heritage Centre in Winlaton Mill.
This is more than just a kitchen role. It's an opportunity to shape a thriving café offer, inspire a team, and play a key part in welcoming visitors from across the region.
If you're someone who enjoys being creative with menus, takes pride in serving fresh, high-quality food, and loves seeing customers leave with a smile, we'd love to hear from you.
    What You'll Be Doing
As our Lead Chef, you'll be at the heart of the café operation, leading the kitchen and ensuring every dish meets the highest standards. From creating seasonal menus and preparing fresh food to managing stock, maintaining food safety standards, and supporting your team, no two days will be the same.
You'll also have the opportunity to contribute ideas, develop new food offerings, and help grow the reputation of our café as a destination in its own right.
    What We're Looking For
You'll be a talented chef with previous experience leading or managing a kitchen, along with:
    * A genuine passion for fresh, high-quality food
    * Strong leadership and team-building skills
    * Experience with menu planning and food cost management
    * Excellent knowledge of food hygiene and health & safety standards
    * A positive, hands-on approach and the ability to thrive in a busy environment
    * Great organisational skills and attention to detail
Most importantly, you'll be someone who enjoys working with people, takes pride in what they do, and wants to be part of something special.
If you're an enthusiastic chef looking for a role where you can lead, create, and make a difference every day, we'd love to hear from you.
Closing Date: Thursday 15th October 2026
Please note, should we receive a high volume of applications, we may look to close the role early, therefore we recommend an early application.
