How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

Mechanical Design Engineer – Power Generation

    Location: Derbyshire / Hybrid Working
    Salary: £60,000 – £70,000 + Benefits
    Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:00am–5:00pm

We are recruiting for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join a well-established and growing engineering business specialising in critical power and power generation solutions.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Mechanical Design Engineer with experience across power generation, generators, engines, industrial equipment or complex engineered systems to take a key role in the design and delivery of technically challenging projects.

Based from the company's Derbyshire operation with hybrid working available, you will work on major projects across sectors including data centres, critical infrastructure, healthcare, industrial and utility applications.

    The Role

As Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for the design, integration, validation and lifecycle support of diesel, gas and hybrid generator systems, ensuring mechanical integrity, reliability, compliance and performance.

You will work across the full project lifecycle, from initial design and engineering through manufacture, testing, installation and commissioning.

    Key responsibilities will include:

    * Mechanical design and engineering of diesel, gas and hybrid generator systems

    * Design and integration of engines, alternators, base frames, enclosures, cooling systems, exhaust systems and fuel systems

    * Producing detailed 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, BOMs and technical documentation

    * Mechanical system integration, alignment and vibration-isolation design

    * Carrying out engineering calculations covering thermal performance, structural integrity, noise and vibration (NVH)

    * Designing and reviewing mechanical layouts, piping interfaces and airflow paths

    * Ensuring designs comply with relevant ISO, IEC, BS and CE/UKCA standards

    * Reviewing supplier/vendor drawings and technical documentation

    * Driving design for manufacture (DFM), cost reduction and product improvement

    * Supporting endurance, load, thermal, acoustic and vibration testing

    * Analysing test results and implementing corrective design actions

    * Conducting root cause analysis relating to design and field failures

    * Providing mechanical engineering support during installation and commissioning

    * Reviewing foundation designs, lifting arrangements and equipment interfaces

    * Troubleshooting mechanical issues during system start-up and load acceptance

    * Working closely with electrical, controls, civil, procurement and quality teams

    * Supporting reliability improvements and maintenance strategy development

    * Acting as the mechanical engineering focal point for allocated projects

    * Supporting customer technical discussions and pre-sales engineering activities

    About You

We are interested in speaking with experienced Mechanical Design Engineers from power generation, generators, engines, industrial machinery, rotating equipment or other complex engineered equipment backgrounds.

    Ideally, you will have:

    * Strong mechanical design engineering experience

    * Experience producing 3D CAD models and detailed manufacturing drawings

    * Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles and system integration

    * Experience producing engineering drawings, BOMs and technical documentation

    * Knowledge of fabricated structures, enclosures, pipework, cooling or fuel systems

    * Ability to carry out relevant mechanical engineering calculations

    * Understanding of thermal performance, structural design and/or vibration

    * Experience supporting manufacturing and resolving production engineering issues

    * Knowledge of design for manufacture and design for assembly

    * Experience working with suppliers and reviewing technical drawings

    * Experience with FAT, SAT, testing or commissioning would be advantageous

Previous experience specifically with generator sets, diesel/gas engines, power generation, data centres or critical power systems would be highly advantageous, but candidates from closely related heavy engineering or industrial equipment environments are also of interest.

    What's on Offer?

£60,000 – £70,000 basic salary, depending on experience, alongside hybrid working and the opportunity to work on major engineering projects within the critical power sector.

This position offers significant technical variety and the opportunity to remain hands-on with mechanical design, while taking ownership of projects throughout design, manufacture, testing and commissioning
