How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Job Overview

    We are looking for an experienced Lighting & Emergency Lighting Design Engineer to support the design and delivery of lighting and emergency lighting systems across commercial, industrial and public-sector projects.

    The successful candidate will have strong technical knowledge of lighting design, emergency lighting requirements, relevant British Standards and lighting design software. They will be responsible for producing lighting calculations, layouts, technical drawings and design documentation, ensuring systems meet project specifications, statutory requirements and client expectations.

    Key Responsibilities

    * Design and develop internal and external lighting systems for commercial, industrial and public-sector buildings.

    * Produce emergency lighting designs in accordance with BS 5266-1 and relevant standards.

    * Carry out lighting calculations, lux-level assessments and emergency lighting coverage assessments.

    * Use lighting design software to produce calculations, layouts, specifications and technical reports.

    * Develop lighting layouts, luminaire schedules, circuit information and installation drawings.

    * Specify suitable luminaires, emergency lighting fittings, exit signs and control systems.

    * Liaise with electrical engineers, M&E contractors, architects, consultants and clients to coordinate designs.

    * Review technical submissions, equipment selections and contractor proposals.

    * Ensure designs comply with relevant British Standards, Building Regulations and project specifications.

    * Attend design meetings and provide technical support during installation, commissioning and handover.

    * Identify design issues, propose solutions and revise drawings and calculations where required.

    * Produce detailed design documentation and as-built information where necessary.

    Essential Requirements

    * Proven experience as a Lighting Design Engineer, Electrical Design Engineer or similar role, with a strong lighting specialism.

    * Demonstrable experience designing emergency lighting systems.

    * Good working knowledge of BS 5266-1 and applicable emergency lighting requirements.

    * Strong understanding of BS EN 1838 and relevant lighting performance requirements.

    * Experience producing lighting calculations, lux plots and technical design drawings.

    * Proficiency in relevant lighting design software, such as DIALux evo or Relux.

    * Ability to interpret electrical drawings, architectural plans and project specifications.

    * Experience coordinating lighting designs with wider M&E services.

    * Good understanding of luminaire selection, lighting controls and emergency lighting systems.

    Desirable Requirements

    * Experience working on hospitals, commercial buildings, education, industrial or infrastructure projects.

    * Experience with AutoCAD and/or Revit.

    * Knowledge of BIM coordination and working within a BIM environment.

    * Experience with central battery systems, self-contained emergency luminaires and emergency lighting testing systems.

    * Experience supporting installation teams, commissioning engineers and project handovers.

    * Relevant electrical engineering qualifications or a degree/HNC/HND in building services or electrical engineering.

    The ideal candidate will be a technically strong lighting specialist who can take a project from initial design through to detailed design and installation support. They should be confident producing compliant emergency lighting designs, interpreting project requirements and working closely with electrical and mechanical design teams
