How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    British Sugar is a home-grown success story and one of the most efficient and competitive beet processers in the world. Around 3,500 farmers based in East Anglia and the East Midlands supply our four advanced manufacturing sites with eight million tonnes of sugar beet every year. We, in turn, make this in to over 1 million tonnes of sugar, serving customers across the UK, Ireland and increasingly growing commercially in the EU and world sugar markets.

    Contract: Fixed Term
    Location: Bury St Edmunds
    Grade: Tier 1
    Hourly rate: £13.79 per hour
    Working Pattern:  5 days a week, Monday to Friday, 7:30am to 4pm  

    The position is TEMPORARY, employment will run from October 2026 to February 2027 (to be confirmed)

    British Sugar is the leading Sugar supplier in the UK and one of the most efficient Sugar processors in the world. Partnering with over 2,400 growers to produce home grown sugar, supplying around 50% of the UK’s sugar market, we are proud to be building and supporting a Beet Sugar industry that works for Britain.

    Main Scope of Role

    Sampling process streams across a large manufacturing site, carrying out both routine and ad-hoc analysis to support process development and optimisation.

    Key Areas

    Candidates will be expected to perform the following:

    Safe collection of manufacturing samples from the factory.
    Updating of laboratory sample inventory.
    Carry out specific sample preparation and analysis methods according to instruction in a safe manner.
    Accurate and organised recording of results.
    Flagging and discussion of issues and observations.
    Maintaining a safe, clean and organised work environment to ensure smooth running.
    Engage and cooperate with other team members to deliver on a dynamic work schedule.
    Travel with team members to other British Sugar sites  

    Knowledge, Skills & Experience Required

    Good communication and timekeeping skills
    Ability to carry out simple mathematical calculations.
    Strong safety awareness
    Basic IT knowledge  

    Knowledge, Skills & Experience Desirable

    Previous experience working in the laboratory environment.

    Scientific qualifications at GCSE/GCE level.
