Salary: £90,000 to £120,000 plus discretionary bonus
Location: Mayfair, London
Working arrangement: Hybrid, three days per week in the office
MFK Recruitment is partnering with a growing energy startup to recruit a Head of Finance.
This is a niche appointment. You must have worked within the finance function of a business that supplies electricity to domestic or business customers. Experience in renewable energy, generation or power trading alone will unfortunately not meet this requirement. We are looking for someone who understands the financial data, reconciliations and cash flows behind an electricity supply business.
The company is a licensed electricity supplier with its own software platform. It supplies and trades power, manages a portfolio of embedded generation sites and is building the technology that supports its operations.
MFK Recruitment has recruited four people into this business over the past 18 months, and all four are still with the company.
The opportunity
As Head of Finance, you will become the sole finance person in the company, working closely with the CEO and senior leadership team. An external finance function currently supports the business and will provide an initial handover. You will then take ownership of finance and build the processes, controls and reporting needed as the company grows.
This is a hands-on role in an energy startup. You could already be leading a finance function, or you could be a strong Finance Manager or senior accountant ready to take the next step. What matters is your electricity supply experience, sound financial control and appetite for broad ownership.
The business relies heavily on data and modern AI tools. The Head of Finance will play a central part in moving to an AI-enabled accounting platform and improving how transactions are reconciled, payments are processed and financial information is reported. You should be genuinely enthusiastic about using data, automation and AI to make finance more accurate, useful and scalable.
Key responsibilities
* Own month-end and year-end close, management accounts and balance-sheet reconciliations
* Report on revenue, gross margin, energy costs and the financial performance of the electricity supply portfolio
* Build cash flow forecasts and manage liquidity, working capital, payments, credit cover and collateral
* Oversee statutory accounts, external audit and finance-related regulatory reporting
* Lead budgeting, forecasting and financial reporting for senior management and the Board
* Establish clear financial controls across supply data, transactions and reporting
* Work with settlements, metering, trading, operations and technology colleagues to understand and reconcile financial data
* Lead the transition to a modern accounting platform and introduce appropriate AI and automated workflows
* Develop finance processes and, as the company grows, help shape its future finance team
What we are looking for
* Direct experience in the finance team of an electricity supplier, with clear exposure to the finances of supplying customers
* Practical knowledge of relevant areas such as settlements, revenue, gross margin, consumption, unbilled revenue, energy costs or related reconciliations
* Strong accounting foundations, including financial controls, month-end reporting and balance-sheet ownership
* The ability to work independently and take responsibility across a broad finance remit
* Confidence working with complex data and collaborating with operational and technology teams
* Genuine interest in AI tools, automation and modern finance systems
* ACA, ACCA or CIMA qualification, or progress towards qualification supported by particularly strong electricity supply finance experience
You do not need to have held the Head of Finance title before. This could be an excellent step for someone with strong electricity supply knowledge who is ready to become the senior finance person in a growing business.
