Location: Doncaster (first few months for training), then Barton Under Needwood, Burton-on-Trent
Travel Allowance: 30p per mile claimable while training in Doncaster
Job Type: 6-Month Contract to Permanent (Temp-to-Perm)
Pay Rates:

£18.79 PAYE for Level 3 Qualified Fitters
Hours:

Monday to Thursday
38 hours a week, paid an additional 2 hours per day Mon - Thurs while training in Doncaster. 

The Opportunity

Ford & Stanley are recruiting for a Mechanical Fitter to join a maintenance team. This is an excellent opportunity to secure a long-term position with a globally recognised rail engineering business, starting with 3-4 months of training in Doncaster before transitioning to Barton Under Needwood on a permanent basis.

The successful candidates will be responsible for the maintenance, repair, overhaul, and inspection of freight wagons, ensuring all work meets the highest standards of safety, quality, and reliability.

This role would suit candidates from rail, rolling stock, heavy engineering, HGV, automotive, plant, military, manufacturing, or similar mechanical backgrounds.

Key Responsibilities

Carry out maintenance, servicing, and overhaul activities on freight wagons.
Inspect, repair, and replace mechanical components including:

Brake systems
Suspension components
Wheelsets
Couplings
Underframe equipment

Complete mechanical repairs to a high standard.
Replace worn or damaged parts such as bearings, seals, brake blocks, and pipework.
Perform brake testing and functional checks.
Read and interpret engineering drawings, maintenance instructions, and technical documentation.
Complete maintenance records and job cards accurately.
Follow site procedures and work safely at all times.

What We're Looking For

Essential:

Mechanical fitting or engineering experience.
Confident using hand and power tools.
Ability to read and follow engineering documentation.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Level 3 Engineering Qualification required.
Desirable:

Experience working on rolling stock, freight wagons, HGVs, plant machinery, heavy vehicles, or similar equipment.
Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
