Mechanical Fitter

We are recruiting on behalf of an established specialist engineering manufacturer in Leeds that is looking to appoint an experienced Mechanical Fitter to join its production team. This is an excellent opportunity for a practical, experienced engineer who enjoys building machinery and engineered equipment rather than carrying out repetitive production or maintenance work. The company designs and manufactures complex, bespoke industrial equipment for customers operating in demanding engineering sectors. Much of what it produces is engineered to individual customer requirements, meaning the work is technically interesting, varied and requires a high standard of mechanical fitting and assembly. The successful candidate will be involved in building equipment from the ground up, working from engineering drawings and technical information through to completed, tested machinery.

Mechanical Fitter - The role - Plant Equipment, Electro-mechanical, Machinery, Precision Engineering

This is a hands-on mechanical fitting and machine-build position based within a well-established engineering and manufacturing environment. You will work as part of an experienced engineering team assembling new machinery and equipment, installing mechanical components, pipework and pneumatic systems, and ensuring completed builds meet the required engineering standards. Unlike a maintenance position, the emphasis here is predominantly on new-build equipment. You will be taking individual components, fabricated parts and bought-in equipment and turning them into complete engineered systems. The machinery can be relatively complex, so the role will suit someone who is comfortable interpreting drawings, understanding how different mechanical systems fit together and solving practical engineering problems as a build progresses.

Mechanical Fitter - The Candidate - Plant Equipment, Electro-mechanical, Machinery, Precision Engineering

We are looking for an experienced Mechanical Fitter, Machine Builder or Mechanical Assembly Engineer who has previously worked within a machinery manufacturing, special-purpose equipment or similar engineering environment. This role will particularly suit someone who enjoys building things. You should be comfortable receiving a set of engineering drawings and taking responsibility for assembling equipment correctly, rather than working in an environment where every task is highly repetitive or dictated by a production line. The company produces relatively low-volume, technically involved equipment, so good engineering judgement and practical problem-solving ability are important. You are likely to have completed a mechanical engineering apprenticeship, NVQ or equivalent practical training and will have developed strong fitting and assembly skills through experience.

Some electrical experience would also be useful. Candidates who are comfortable with basic electrical assembly, wiring or working from electrical schematics may have the opportunity to use those skills, although the core requirement is for someone with strong mechanical fitting and machine-build experience.

This is a particularly good opportunity for a Mechanical Fitter who enjoys proper engineering and wants to work on equipment where one build can be very different from the next. Rather than spending every day assembling the same component or maintaining the same production machinery, you will be involved in manufacturing technically interesting equipment from individual parts through to completed systems. The business has a long-established engineering and manufacturing operation and supplies equipment into demanding industries where build quality, reliability and attention to detail are extremely important. As a result, this is an environment where experienced fitters are trusted to use their engineering knowledge and practical judgement rather than simply following repetitive assembly instructions. The position would suit someone who takes pride in their workmanship, enjoys understanding how machinery works and gets genuine satisfaction from seeing a complex piece of equipment progress from a collection of components to a finished, tested machine.
