Role Overview
We are seeking a skilled Database Engineer / Data Engineer / DBA to join a large-scale data and technology transformation programme within financial services. In this hands-on engineering role, you will be responsible for provisioning, configuring, deploying, administering, and supporting enterprise database platforms across both relational and distributed NoSQL ecosystems.
You will collaborate closely with Application Teams and Data Architects to design and deploy new initiatives into production. This position focuses on driving deployment consistency, reliability, and infrastructure automation across the full database lifecycle. Production patching, routine backups, and basic operational support are managed by a separate team, allowing this role to concentrate on core engineering, repeatable patterns, and platform modernization.
Key Responsibilities
Platform Engineering & Administration: Engineers, configures, deploys, and administers relational (Oracle, PostgreSQL) and NoSQL (MongoDB, Cassandra, Couchbase) database environments, including cloud equivalents.
Lifecycle & Environment Management: Builds and maintains database environments across development, test, staging, and production lifecycle stages.
Automation & CI/CD: Develops Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and automated processes for database provisioning, configuration, DDL deployment, and release management via CI/CD pipelines to mitigate configuration drift.
Performance & Optimization: Monitors platform health and resolves performance bottlenecks, covering execution plans, indexing, query optimization, connection handling, locking/contention, storage capacity, and replication performance.
High Availability & Resilience: Configures, tests, and supports high availability, clustering, replication, and disaster recovery processes to ensure business continuity.
Security & Governance: Manages access control (users, roles, permissions), encryption, vulnerability remediation, and regulatory compliance standards.
Architecture & Collaboration: Partners with Application Developers and Data Architects to align database deployments with target data models and enterprise standards.
Operations & Support: Participates in complex troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, incident management, and capacity planning.
Standards & Documentation: Authors technical runbooks, operational standards, and reusable engineering patterns to simplify and standardize the database estate.
Required Skills & Experience
Core Qualifications
Proven database engineering and administration experience in large-scale, highly regulated enterprise environments (e.g., financial services or banking).
Strong production experience with relational databases (Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL) and NoSQL platforms (MongoDB, Cassandra, Couchbase).
Familiarity with cloud-equivalent database implementations and modern database technologies.
Automation-first mindset with experience implementing automated release mechanisms.
A proactive approach to learning and adopting new database platform capabilities.
