How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Location: Lancashire / Hybrid
    Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
    Employment Type: Permanent
    Working Pattern: Full-time

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Java Developer to join a forward-thinking technology team working on modern, enterprise-scale software solutions.

This is an excellent opportunity for a developer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges, working with modern technologies and contributing to the design and development of robust, scalable applications.

You will work closely with other developers, technical leads, architects and stakeholders, contributing to solution design, development, testing and continuous improvement.

    The Role

As a Senior Java Developer, you will:

    * Design, develop and maintain high-quality Java applications and services.

    * Develop scalable, robust and highly available microservices.

    * Work extensively with Java and Spring Boot.

    * Contribute to solution architecture and technical design.

    * Participate in technical discussions, design workshops and peer code reviews.

    * Produce clean, maintainable and well-tested code.

    * Identify opportunities to refactor and improve existing systems.

    * Contribute to technical decisions and help identify and manage technical debt.

    * Develop and work with RESTful APIs and event-driven solutions.

    * Work with databases including MongoDB and relational databases.

    * Work with messaging and event-streaming technologies such as Kafka.

    * Develop and maintain automated unit and integration tests.

    * Work with Docker and Kubernetes within modern cloud environments.

    * Contribute to monitoring, logging, observability and application performance.

    * Participate in Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, refinement, reviews and retrospectives.

    * Work closely with Product, Architecture and other technical teams to understand requirements and deliver effective solutions.

    * Share knowledge and support less experienced developers where appropriate.

    * Keep up to date with emerging technologies and development practices.

As an ideal candidate you will be a technically strong Senior Java Developer with a genuine interest in modern software development and solving complex technical problems. The ideal candidate will have substantial commercial experience with Java and be highly proficient in Spring and Spring Boot. They should be comfortable designing and developing microservices architectures and have a solid understanding of REST APIs and web‑based systems. Experience working with MongoDB or other NoSQL technologies is important, as is familiarity with Kafka or similar messaging and event‑driven platforms.

The role requires hands‑on experience with Docker and Kubernetes, along with a strong grasp of software design principles and design patterns to ensure maintainable and scalable solutions. Candidates should be confident writing automated tests using tools such as JUnit and Mockito and have a good understanding of scalability, resilience, availability and performance within distributed systems. Experience with CI/CD pipelines and modern development practices is essential, as is familiarity with application monitoring, logging and observability tools. The position sits within an Agile/Scrum environment, so strong problem‑solving skills, analytical thinking and excellent communication abilities are key to working effectively with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.

It would be advantageous for candidates to have experience with React.js or another modern frontend framework, as well as an understanding of Domain‑Driven Design. Experience working within cloud environments such as AWS is desirable, alongside any previous involvement in mentoring developers or taking technical ownership of projects. The ability to contribute to architectural decisions and help shape technical direction would further strengthen a candidate’s suitability for this role.

    What You'll Get

This is an opportunity to join a collaborative technical environment where developers are encouraged to contribute ideas, challenge solutions constructively and take ownership of their work.

You will have the opportunity to work on significant technical challenges, modernise systems and contribute to the development of scalable, high-quality software within an experienced technology team.

If you're an experienced Java Developer looking for your next technical challenge, we'd be keen to hear from you
