How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

Our client, a public sector organisation, is looking for an experienced Senior Environmental Health Officer to join their Private Sector Housing team on an initial 9-month contract.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced EHO with a strong background in private sector housing, HHSRS and enforcement to take on a senior position within an established team. The role combines technical environmental health expertise with team leadership, complex casework, enforcement and stakeholder management.

    The Role

As a Senior Environmental Health Officer, you will play a key role in maintaining and improving standards across the private rented housing sector. You will provide professional and technical support to the team, oversee complex housing cases and help ensure that appropriate enforcement action is taken where necessary.

You will also have responsibility for managing and supporting staff, monitoring performance and contributing to the ongoing development of the service.

    The role will involve:

    * Leading and supporting a team of professional and technical staff within Private Sector Housing.

    * Undertaking complex inspections and investigations relating to residential property conditions.

    * Assessing housing hazards and taking appropriate formal enforcement action.

    * Providing expert advice on housing legislation, HHSRS and associated environmental health matters.

    * Signing and overseeing the correct service of statutory notices.

    * Preparing prosecution cases and dealing with evidential requirements for court and appeal proceedings.

    * Acting as an expert witness where required, including at tribunals and higher courts.

    * Leading specific projects and supporting the development of policies, procedures and service improvements.

    * Working with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, including partner agencies, Elected Members and MPs.

    * Deputising for the Private Sector Housing Manager when required.

    About You

We are looking for a qualified and experienced Environmental Health professional who can demonstrate strong knowledge and practical experience within private sector housing.

    You will ideally have:

    * A degree in Environmental Health/Environmental Services or a Diploma in Environmental Health.

    * Competency training in HHSRS.

    * Significant experience of inspecting residential properties, assessing housing conditions and taking formal enforcement action.

    * Strong knowledge of the Housing Act and associated legislation.

    * Experience of preparing cases and working with the legal processes and evidential requirements of civil and criminal courts.

    * Experience of interpreting complex legislation and explaining requirements to a range of stakeholders.

    * Previous team management or line management experience, with the ability to support and develop staff.

    * Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience of preparing reports and statutory notices.

    * The confidence to deal with challenging or confrontational situations.

    * Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office and relevant databases.
