How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Temporary Caretaker - York

    Location: York
    Pay Rate: £18.00-£19.00 per hour
    Hours: Split shift - 6:30am-10:00am & 2:00pm-6:00pm
    Contract: Temporary
    Driving Licence: Essential

    We are currently recruiting for an experienced and reliable Temporary Caretaker to support the day-to-day operation, security and maintenance of a busy site in York.

    This is a hands-on role requiring someone who is practical, responsible and confident working independently. You will play a key role in ensuring the site is opened, operated and secured safely each day, while providing general maintenance and operational support.

    Key Responsibilities

    Open the site at 6:30am, ensuring cleaners can access the site from 6:45am and that toilets, gates and access points are ready for public use.
    Lock and unlock all buildings and access points, including the archway, walled garden and courtyard gates.
    Turn off lights, close windows and set alarms to ensure the site is safe and secure.
    Manage gates and barriers in line with college opening times.
    Act as an emergency key holder, attending site when required to secure the premises promptly.
    Take monthly cash takings from the Visitor Centre to the bank.
    Carry out minor building maintenance and general repairs.
    Complete routine site compliance checks, including water, emergency lighting, lifts, fire doors/exits, plant rooms and fire extinguishers.
    Carry out alarm testing and regular site patrols.
    Take utility meter readings.
    Keep the site clean and free from litter, empty bins and manage waste collections, including public bins.
    Regularly monitor public toilets and report or address cleanliness and maintenance issues.
    Conduct daily room checks, carrying out minor repairs and reporting any damage to the Site Operations Manager.
    Undertake general housekeeping, deliveries and furniture/equipment moves.
    Maintain stock levels of essential supplies, including paper products and toilet supplies.
    Support general site operations, including patrols, parking, traffic/taxi management and gritting.
    Assist with fire evacuations and drills, including operating fire alarms where required.
    Monitor and supervise contractors on site alongside the Campus Operations Manager.
    Clean internal windows and entrance doors, including internal and external surfaces.
    Remove weeds from external areas and pathways.
    Collect and distribute internal mail and parcels.
    Complete PAT testing of portable electrical equipment in line with the agreed testing cycle, currently every six months.
    Lock down the campus courtyard to the public at 5:15pm, including the archway, metal gates and walled garden.
    Ensure all buildings are alarmed and fully secured by 6:00pm.

    About You

    The successful candidate will be:

    Reliable, punctual and highly responsible.
    Practical and confident carrying out minor maintenance and repairs.
    Comfortable working independently and using initiative.
    Security-conscious, with a strong awareness of site safety.
    Confident dealing with members of the public, contractors and site staff.
    Organised, with good attention to detail.
    Able to undertake physical duties including moving equipment, emptying bins and general housekeeping.
    Previous experience in a caretaking, facilities, maintenance, security or site operations role would be advantageous.
