£60,000 - £70,000 + 10% Bonus
We are looking for an experienced Lead Engineer to join a specialist engineering and manufacturing business working on complex, bespoke machinery and equipment. This is a varied, customer-facing role for someone with a strong mechanical engineering background who enjoys being involved in the full engineering process.
Lead Engineer Roles and Responsibilities:
* Lead the technical direction and mechanical design of complex machinery, mechanisms and bespoke equipment
* Produce and check 3D CAD designs and 2D manufacturing drawings, ideally using Autodesk Inventor
* Produce and verify engineering calculations and ensure designs meet required standards
* Review designs for manufacture and act as the technical authority for engineering queries
* Take ownership of engineering projects from initial enquiry through to successful completion
* Coordinate engineering documentation, workshop activities, resources and project programmes
* Monitor projects against cost, time and quality targets
* Work directly with customers to understand requirements and provide technical support
* Provide engineering input into bids, estimates, proposals and project budgets
* Lead, mentor and support the engineering team
* Get involved with hands-on mechanical build, assembly, fitting and development where required
* Work closely with engineering, manufacturing, production and commercial teams
Lead Engineer Ideal Candidate:
* Degree-level qualification in Mechanical Engineering or similar, or equivalent industry experience
* Strong mechanical engineering background with experience designing complex or bespoke machinery
* Experience taking technical ownership of projects from concept through to completion
* Previous experience providing technical leadership, mentoring or line management
* Strong 3D CAD experience, ideally Autodesk Inventor, with experience producing 2D manufacturing drawings
* Good knowledge of GD&T to BS8888:2020 and engineering calculations
* Strong understanding of design for manufacture and manufacturability
* Commercially aware with an understanding of project budgets, costs and resource planning
* Confident communicating with customers, suppliers and internal teams
* Able to manage multiple projects, priorities and deadlines with a proactive and practical approach
