Senior Java Developer

Contract: 12 months
Locations: Manchester, Leeds or Birmingham
Working Arrangement: 60% office attendance from one of the following locations:
IR35: Inside IR35
Day Rate: £750 per day via Umbrella
Security: candidates must be eligible for SC clearance
The Opportunity
We are looking for experienced Senior Java Developers to join a large-scale digital transformation programme delivering critical public services.
This is an excellent opportunity for a senior software engineer who enjoys working hands-on with modern Java technologies while providing technical leadership, mentoring and guidance to other developers.
You will play a key role in designing, developing and maintaining robust, resilient and high-quality digital services, while helping teams adopt and maintain strong software engineering practices.
Key Responsibilities
* Develop high-quality, maintainable software using Java and Spring Boot.
* Design and develop reusable libraries, services and APIs.
* Contribute to the design and delivery of scalable and resilient digital services.
* Provide technical leadership and guidance across software engineering teams.
* Review code and technical designs, ensuring engineering standards are maintained.
* Coach and mentor junior and mid-level developers.
* Work collaboratively with Architecture, Engineering, Delivery and other technical teams.
* Design and support system integrations and integration testing.
* Investigate and resolve complex infrastructure and production issues.
* Provide 3rd-line support for developed products, including occasional out-of-hours support where required.
* Promote engineering best practice, knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.
* Contribute to technical strategy and longer-term product direction.
* Consider security, accessibility, resilience, availability and operational stability throughout the development lifecycle.
* Identify technical risks and proactively develop appropriate solutions.
Essential Technical Skills
You will have strong commercial experience with:
* Java
* Spring Boot
* AWS
* Apache Kafka
* MongoDB
* Microservices and RESTful APIs
* Automated testing and modern software engineering practices
* CI/CD and DevOps principles
* Distributed systems and system integration
What We're Looking For
We are looking for an experienced Senior Software Engineer who can work independently, take ownership and hit the ground running.
Ideally, you will have experience in:
Leading or providing technical direction to software engineering teams.
Mentoring and developing junior and mid-level engineers.
Designing systems with scalability, resilience, availability and security in mind.
Reviewing and challenging technical designs.
Troubleshooting complex production and infrastructure problems.
Working within Agile delivery environments.
Establishing and promoting engineering standards and best practice.
Working with multiple stakeholders and communicating complex technical concepts clearly.
