About the Role
We are seeking a dedicated, confident and resilient Behaviour Mentor to join a supportive and inclusive school in Harrow. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about helping young people overcome barriers to learning and develop the confidence, emotional resilience and behaviours needed to succeed.
As a Behaviour Mentor, you will play an important role within the school’s pastoral and inclusion team, working closely with teaching staff, SEN professionals and senior leaders. You will support pupils who may experience challenging behaviour, emotional difficulties, social needs, low confidence, disengagement or difficulties with emotional regulation.
This role is particularly suited to someone who wants to build a long-term career in education, behaviour, SEN or pastoral support, with the school offering opportunities for professional development, training and progression for the right candidate.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide one-to-one and small-group mentoring for pupils with behavioural, emotional and social needs.
* Build strong, positive relationships with pupils and become a consistent and trusted source of support.
* Help pupils understand and manage their behaviour, emotions and responses to challenging situations.
* Support pupils to develop self-regulation, resilience, confidence, communication and social skills.
* Use positive behaviour strategies to encourage pupils to make appropriate choices and take responsibility for their actions.
* Support pupils who may display challenging or disruptive behaviour, remaining calm and consistent when managing difficult situations.
* Identify potential triggers and help pupils develop practical strategies to manage their behaviour.
* Support pupils to re-engage with learning and overcome barriers that may be affecting their progress.
* Work alongside teachers and the wider pastoral/SEN team to put appropriate support strategies in place.
* Monitor pupil behaviour and progress, providing regular feedback to teachers and senior staff.
* Support pupils during lessons, social times and other school activities where additional behavioural support may be required.
* Help de-escalate situations and provide appropriate support when pupils become distressed or dysregulated.
* Encourage pupils to develop greater independence, accountability and positive attitudes towards school.
* Contribute to a safe, respectful and inclusive school environment.
* Maintain accurate records and follow school policies relating to behaviour, safeguarding and pupil wellbeing.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have
* Experience working with children or young people, particularly those with behavioural, emotional or additional needs.
* Previous experience as a Behaviour Mentor, Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant, Youth Worker, SEN Support Worker or similar would be advantageous.
* A calm, patient and resilient approach, with the confidence to manage challenging situations.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
* The ability to establish positive relationships while maintaining clear boundaries and expectations.
* Confidence working independently with pupils as well as as part of a wider team.
* A genuine passion for supporting young people to overcome barriers and reach their potential.
* Good understanding of positive behaviour management and emotional regulation strategies.
* A proactive and solution-focused approach.
* Relevant qualifications or experience in education, behaviour, SEN, mentoring, youth work or pastoral support are desirable but not essential.
* DBS on the Update Service or willingness to apply
