The Opportunity
We are supporting an established heavy engineering and manufacturing business that is looking to recruit an experienced Mechanical Fitter to join its engineering team.
This is a hands-on maintenance position responsible for maintaining, repairing and improving a wide range of manufacturing machinery and associated plant.
Working closely with Engineering and Production, you will play an important part in improving equipment reliability, reducing downtime and ensuring machinery remains safe and operational.
Key Responsibilities
As Mechanical Fitter, you will:
- Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM), reactive maintenance and mechanical repairs.
- Diagnose mechanical faults and breakdowns on manufacturing machinery.
- Maintain, repair and install mechanical plant, machinery and associated equipment.
- Identify defective or worn mechanical components and carry out repairs or replacements.
- Work on mechanical transmission systems, hydraulics and pneumatics.
- Carry out routine machinery inspections, lubrication schedules and safety checks.
- Fault find and troubleshoot mechanical equipment to minimise production downtime.
- Support machinery installations, modifications and improvement projects.
- Carry out fitting, assembly and general mechanical engineering activities.
- Undertake basic fabrication and welding activities where required.
- Work with bearings, gearboxes, motors, shafts, drives and other mechanical components.
- Support electrical and mechanical colleagues with maintenance activities.
- Identify the root causes of recurring equipment failures and recommend improvements.
- Contribute to continuous improvement projects focused on plant reliability, productivity and OEE.
- Assist with the development and improvement of PPM schedules.
- Identify critical engineering spares and support stock management.
- Liaise with suppliers and contractors where required.
- Complete relevant maintenance reports, checklists and engineering documentation.
- Ensure all work is completed safely and in accordance with site Health & Safety procedures.
Essential Experience
To be considered for this position, you should have:
- Previous experience as a Mechanical Fitter, Mechanical Maintenance Engineer or Mechanical Technician within a manufacturing or industrial environment.
- Strong mechanical fault-finding and problem-solving skills.
- Experience maintaining and repairing industrial/manufacturing machinery.
- Experience with mechanical transmission systems.
- Working knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
- Experience with planned and reactive maintenance.
- The ability to identify worn or defective components and complete effective repairs.
- Good fitting, assembly and general mechanical engineering skills.
- The ability to work independently as well as part of an engineering team.
- A proactive approach to plant reliability and continuous improvement.
- A strong commitment to Health & Safety.
Experience within heavy manufacturing, metal processing, steel, automotive, casting, forging or a similar industrial environment would be particularly beneficial.
Advantageous Experience
Any of the following would be beneficial:
- MIG welding and fabrication.
- Manual machining including lathes and milling machines.
- Bench fitting and assembly.
- Experience working with hydraulic and pneumatic machinery.
- Working at Height.
- Confined Space training.
- Forklift licence.
- Crane, lifting and slinging experience.
- MEWP licence.
- First Aid or Fire Marshal training.
- Experience contributing to OEE and plant reliability improvements.
The Candidate
This role would suit an experienced Mechanical Fitter, Mechanical Maintenance Engineer, Maintenance Fitter or Mechanical Technician who enjoys working hands-on with industrial machinery.
You should be comfortable diagnosing mechanical problems, stripping and repairing machinery, replacing components and carrying out preventative maintenance.
The position offers a four-day working week, Monday to Thursday, alongside significant overtime opportunities for someone looking to increase their earnings
