How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

If you're an experienced Fire Engineer looking for greater autonomy, flexible working and the opportunity to work across a genuinely varied portfolio of projects, this could be a very good next move.
PB Fire Safety is expanding its specialist fire engineering capability within an established Health & Safety consultancy that has been supporting clients for more than 20 years.
We're looking for a Fire Engineer or Senior Fire Engineer to provide fire engineering, fire strategy and design support across projects throughout the UK.
The role is approximately 90% home-based, with travel for client meetings, surveys and site inspections when required.
You'll work alongside our Fire Safety, Principal Designer (Building Regulations) and Principal Designer (CDM) teams across residential, high-rise, education, retail, commercial and industrial projects.
You'll have the freedom to take ownership of your work while remaining part of a collaborative specialist team.
    What you'll be doing
You will develop and review fire strategies and technical reports across multiple RIBA stages, provide fire engineering design and compliance advice, review drawings and technical submissions and support clients and design teams throughout the project lifecycle.
The work will include new-build and existing buildings, including retrospective fire strategies and higher-risk residential projects.
You'll also provide advice relating to the Building Regulations, Approved Document B, the Building Safety Act and relevant British Standards, undertake site inspections and compliance reviews, and provide technical support during construction.
Depending on your experience, you'll also have opportunities to contribute to fee proposals, client development, peer review and the continued development of PB Fire Safety's fire engineering capability.
    What we're looking for
We're particularly interested in candidates who have hands-on experience producing fire strategy reports, rather than candidates whose experience has been limited to general fire risk assessment.
You'll need a strong understanding of UK fire engineering principles and the regulatory environment, with practical knowledge of Approved Document B, BS 9991 and/or BS 9999.
You should be comfortable reviewing architectural and technical information, participating in design-team discussions and providing clear, defensible technical advice to clients.
Experience involving higher-risk buildings, the Building Safety Act, BS 7974, CFD/smoke modelling or ASET/RSET analysis would be particularly valuable.
You'll ideally hold a degree or equivalent qualification in Fire Engineering or a related discipline and be a member of, or working towards professional membership with, the Institution of Fire Engineers or another relevant professional body.
We welcome candidates working towards IEng or CEng registration, and professional development will be supported.
    What PB Fire Safety offers
£60,000–£85,000 salary depending on experience, predominantly home-based working, considerable autonomy, a varied UK project portfolio, contributory pension, paid professional membership fees and CPD/professional-development support.
Holiday entitlement is 28 days including bank holidays, plus a further three paid days during the Christmas/New Year company shutdown.
Most importantly, this is an opportunity to join a growing specialist division where you can have a genuine influence on how the fire engineering service develops rather than simply becoming another engineer in a large team.
