How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Environmental Health Investigator – Infectious Disease

    Location: Bristol – BS1 5TR

    Contract: 7 months initially, with potential for extension and permanent opportunities

    Hours: Full-time, 37 hours per week

    Rate: £45.00 per hour Umbrella

    Working arrangements: Hybrid – home working, office-based work and site visits

    We are currently seeking an experienced Environmental Health Investigator to join a busy Public Protection Environmental Health Service in Bristol.

    This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Environmental Health professional with Local Authority experience, strong investigative skills and experience of infectious disease investigations.

    The Role

    The successful candidate will undertake a varied Environmental Health caseload, with a particular focus on:

    * Private water distribution system risk assessments

    * Water sampling and assessment of sampling results

    * Environmental Health inspections and investigations

    * Site visits and risk assessments

    * Infectious disease investigations and incidents

    * Health and safety investigations

    * Gathering, analysing and evaluating information and evidence

    * Preparing detailed investigation and case reports

    * Providing professional Environmental Health advice

    * Liaising with internal departments and external partner organisations

    * Attending relevant meetings and contributing to multi-agency investigations

    * Taking appropriate enforcement action where required

    The role is flexible and involves a combination of home working, office-based work and site visits across Bristol. There may be flexibility around working hours for the right candidate.

    About You

    We are looking for an experienced Environmental Health professional who can demonstrate:

    * EHRB/EHORB registration

    * Previous Environmental Health experience within a Local Authority

    * Proven experience undertaking infectious disease investigations

    * Experience working within an Environmental Health service and applying relevant legislation, regulations, codes of practice and guidance

    * Strong investigation, inspection and risk-assessment skills

    * Excellent written and verbal communication skills

    * Experience producing clear and accurate professional reports

    * Confidence dealing with difficult, sensitive or potentially confrontational situations

    * Ability to assess risk and take proportionate and appropriate action

    * Ability to manage a caseload, prioritise competing demands and meet deadlines

    * Experience working collaboratively with colleagues, businesses, partner agencies and other organisations

    * Ability to work independently with minimum supervision

    * Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and Outlook

    * Ability to represent the service professionally in meetings and other formal settings

    Experience relating to private water supplies, water sampling, health and safety, pollution control, housing, food safety or Port Health would be advantageous.

    Qualifications

    * Applicants should hold an appropriate Environmental Health qualification and be registered with the Environmental Health Officers Registration Board (EHRB/EHORB).

    * Additional relevant qualifications, such as NEBOSH, housing, acoustics, food science or management qualifications, would be advantageous.

    The Opportunity

    This is a varied Environmental Health opportunity within a Public Protection service, offering exposure to private water investigations, infectious disease, health and safety and wider Environmental Health work.

    The contract is initially for 7 months, with the potential for extension and/or permanent opportunities for the right candidate.
