Teach Now is looking for an experienced SEN Teaching Assistant to provide predominantly 1:1 support for an autistic pupil in Year 3. This is a priority appointment for a supportive primary school in Barnet, with an immediate start available.
The pupil is verbal, able to access the curriculum and spends most of the day in the classroom. Support is particularly important during transitions, social activities and less structured periods, when the pupil may become overwhelmed or require movement breaks, quiet time or access to an individual workstation.
The Role
As the SEN Teaching Assistant, you will:
• Build a positive and trusting relationship with the pupil.
• Recognise early signs of emotional dysregulation and respond calmly.
• Use choices, reassurance and positive strategies to support transitions.
• Help the pupil access classroom learning while encouraging independence.
• Provide guidance during playtimes, lunchtimes and social interactions.
• Support the appropriate use of movement breaks, downtime and quieter working spaces.
• Work closely with the class teacher and wider SEN team to maintain consistent support.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal SEN Teaching Assistant will:
• Have previous experience supporting autistic pupils or children with SEND.
• Understand emotional regulation, sensory needs and potential triggers.
• Be able to anticipate difficulties and provide support before situations escalate.
• Combine a nurturing approach with clear, consistent boundaries.
• Be calm, observant, patient and confident working independently.
• Communicate effectively with teachers and other support professionals.
You will join an established Year 3 team with several adults already supporting pupils with EHCPs. This provides a collaborative environment where responsibilities and strategies can be shared consistently.
