How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    A London Local Authority is seeking an experienced Principal Transport Planner (Active Travel) to join its Climate & Transport team on a long-term interim basis. This is a senior leadership and delivery position with primary responsibility for the Council's active travel programme, including cycling, walking, cycle infrastructure, micromobility, e-bikes and behaviour-change programmes.

    Rate: £450 per day Umbrella
    Contract: Temporary / Interim
    Duration: Long-term contract
    Working Pattern: Hybrid – 2 days office-based per week
    Department: Climate & Transport

    You will lead the development and delivery of major active travel schemes, provide strategic transport planning expertise and oversee the delivery of high-quality infrastructure designed to increase sustainable travel, improve public health and reduce emissions.

    The role will also have significant responsibility for dockless and shared micromobility, including e-bike provision, operator management, parking arrangements, procurement, contracts and performance management.

    Key Responsibilities
    Lead the development and delivery of the Council's active travel strategy, programme and policy.
    Lead major cycling and walking schemes, including cycle lanes, strategic routes, junction improvements and corridor-based schemes.
    Oversee the planning and delivery of cycling infrastructure, including cycle parking, cycle hubs and associated public realm.
    Lead programmes covering walking, cycling, sustainable travel and behaviour change.
    Develop and manage the Council's approach to micromobility, including shared and dockless e-bike schemes.
    Manage relationships with micromobility operators, including performance, compliance, contractual arrangements, MOUs and procurement.
    Oversee supporting infrastructure including cycle parking, hubs, docking facilities, dropped kerbs, crossings and improved pedestrian facilities.
    Use transport and sustainable travel data to identify opportunities, monitor usage and measure the impact of interventions.
    Commission and manage transport consultants and contractors, ensuring schemes are delivered to time, cost and quality.
    Secure and manage external funding, developer contributions and investment for active travel programmes.
    Provide authoritative technical advice to senior officers, elected Members and stakeholders.
    Prepare reports and present complex transport matters at committees, public meetings and stakeholder forums.
    Work closely with TfL, transport operators, neighbouring boroughs and London-wide transport partnerships.
    Integrate active travel priorities into planning, development management and wider public realm programmes.
    Lead and manage the Active Travel team, setting priorities, allocating resources and overseeing performance.
    Manage budgets, contracts, programme risks and resources, ensuring value for money.
    Champion innovation, trials and best practice across active travel and sustainable transport.
    Ensure schemes and programmes comply with relevant legislation, standards, guidance and Council policies.About You

    The successful candidate will have substantial experience working at Principal Transport Planner, Senior Transport Planner, Transport Planning Manager or equivalent level, ideally within a local authority, TfL or consultancy environment.

    You should have strong experience across:

    Active Travel / Sustainable Transport
    Cycling infrastructure and cycle networks
    Walking and pedestrian schemes
    Cycle lanes and active travel corridors
    Micromobility and shared transport
