How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Mechanical Technician – Rolling Stock / Diesel Engines

    Location: Ardwick Depot
    Contract: 6 Months +
    IR35 Status: Outside IR35
    Shift Pattern: 4 on / 4 off nights
    Start Date: Monday 28th September 2026
    Positions Available: 4

    Infinitive Resources are currently recruiting for 4 experienced Level 3 Mechanical Technicians to support a long-term rolling stock project in the North West.

    This role will be heavily focused on the maintenance, fault finding, repair and replacement of diesel engines and associated mechanical systems on rolling stock.

    Key responsibilities

    * Carrying out planned and reactive maintenance on diesel-powered rolling stock.

    * Completing Vehicle Maintenance Instructions (VMIs) and scheduled maintenance activities.

    * Fault finding and diagnosing issues on diesel engines and associated systems.

    * Repairing and replacing defective engine and mechanical components.

    * Carrying out mechanical inspections and identifying defects.

    * Supporting engine servicing, maintenance and component change-outs.

    * Working on associated systems including cooling, fuel and lubrication systems.

    * Reading and following engineering drawings, maintenance instructions and technical documentation.

    * Completing maintenance and engineering records accurately.

    * Ensuring all work is completed in line with required safety and quality standards.

    * Supporting the timely return of vehicles to service.

    * Working closely with technicians, engineers and operational teams to maintain fleet availability.

    Applicants must have:

    * Level 3 Mechanical Engineering qualification or equivalent.

    * Previous mechanical experience within the rolling stock industry.

    * Strong hands-on experience working with diesel engines.

    * Experience carrying out diesel engine maintenance, servicing and fault finding.

    * Experience with VMIs and planned rolling stock maintenance.

    * Strong mechanical fault-finding and diagnostic skills.

    * Experience repairing and replacing mechanical components.

    * Ability to work from technical instructions and engineering documentation.
