How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

Civil Design Engineer - Capital Programme

Location: Bidder Street, London (near Canning Town) | Salary: £68,144 plus Inner London Allowance and 3% bonus | Contract: Permanent | Closing date: 20 September 2026

Join UK Power Networks as a Civil Design Engineer within our Capital Programme team. Reporting to the LPN Design Lead, you will turn project scopes into safe, practical and cost-effective civil and structural designs that meet customer expectations for time, quality and budget.

You will produce civil and structural designs for APP and Connections schemes, including contestable and non-contestable works, in line with UK Power Networks standards, relevant Codes of Practice, legislation and CDM Regulations. Working closely with Project Managers, electrical designers, PDC, operational teams, planners, estimators and CAD colleagues, you will support a smooth journey from initial enquiry through design, construction, final connection and business closure.

Your duties will include preparing project costings; producing construction-ready drawings and designs; resolving civil engineering issues; overseeing and contributing to technical, commercial and contractual procurement documents; and ensuring compliance with design assurance and audit processes. You will identify and reduce design hazards, provide clear information to clients, the CDM team, designers and contractors, and fulfil the role of Principal Designer on allocated schemes. You will also deliver excellent customer service, collaborate across UK Power Networks and support and mentor trainee and graduate engineers.

You will hold a BSc in Civil Engineering or an equivalent qualification and bring a civil or structural engineering background, ideally gained within utilities. You will have experience of roadworks, drainage and external works, reinforced concrete foundations and structures, structural steelwork, brick and block cavity walls, and roofing. You will understand CDM Regulations, demonstrate a strong safety culture and IOSH training, and be confident representing UK Power Networks with customers, stakeholders and external engineering organisations.

You will be able to work independently, set and meet targets, find innovative cost-saving solutions and communicate effectively with colleagues and the CAD team. Strong teamwork, written and verbal communication skills, and proficiency in Word, Excel, Project and PowerPoint are essential.

Although largely desk based, the role includes visits to operational and construction sites, site and manufacturer meetings, and internal design reviews. You will be expected to understand and apply the controls needed to manage health, safety and environmental risks throughout your work.
