How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

Are you an experienced Manual Machinist or Tool Room Machinist with a strong background operating conventional machinery?

Are you a time-served engineer who enjoys producing precision components, working from technical drawings and taking ownership of machining work from start to finish?

We're supporting a leading manufacturing business in New Milton who are looking to recruit an experienced General Machinist to join their Tool Room.

This is a hands-on position that would suit an experienced machinist who is confident with manual lathes and mills and has spent significant time working within a Tool Room environment.

    What's the role all about?

As the General Machinist, you'll be responsible for supporting internal manufacturing and tooling requirements, producing components to specified quality standards using a range of conventional Tool Room machinery.

Working closely with Production, Quality and Production Engineering, you'll manufacture components from technical engineering drawings, using your machining knowledge and experience to ensure accuracy, quality and consistency.

This isn't simply a machine operating position. We're looking for a time-served machinist who understands conventional machining techniques, can confidently interpret engineering drawings and has the experience to work independently when required.

    Key responsibilities

Set and operate a range of conventional/manual Tool Room machinery

Operate manual lathes, mills, drills, bandsaws and off-hand grinders

Manufacture components and tooling to specified engineering and quality requirements

Read and interpret detailed technical engineering drawings

Work with engineering tolerances and understand associated GD&T

Carry out accurate dimensional inspection of manufactured components

Use gauges, micrometers, calipers and electronic measuring equipment

Ensure documented process controls are followed throughout manufacturing

Work closely with Quality, Production and Production Engineering teams

Identify and resolve manufacturing problems using a logical and data-led approach

Maintain excellent standards of housekeeping within the Tool Room

Ensure all work is completed in accordance with company procedures and Health & Safety requirements
    What you'll need

We're looking for someone with substantial hands-on machining experience. You'll need:

    To be a time-served engineer

A minimum of 5 years' experience working within a Tool Room environment

    Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship or equivalent

Extensive experience setting and operating manual/conventional machinery

Strong experience with manual lathes and milling machines

Experience operating drills, bandsaws, grinders and other Tool Room equipment

Ability to confidently read and interpret technical engineering drawings

    Knowledge of GD&T

Excellent understanding of engineering measurement and inspection techniques

Extensive experience using micrometers, calipers, gauges and electronic measuring equipment

    Strong attention to detail

    Logical problem-solving ability
    Desirable

It would also be beneficial if you have:

HNC, degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering

    Knowledge of CAD software packages

Previous experience using CAD within a machining or Tool Room environment
    About you

You'll be an experienced machinist who takes pride in producing accurate, high-quality work.

    You'll be:

    Practical and mechanically minded

    Methodical and detail-focused

    Self-sufficient and confident working independently

Equally comfortable working as part of a wider manufacturing team

    Reliable, flexible and trustworthy

Willing to learn and develop additional skills

    Proactive when approaching manufacturing problems
    Interested?

If you're an experienced Manual Machinist, Tool Room Machinist, Conventional Machinist or General Machinist with at least five years' Tool Room experience, we'd love to hear from you.
