About Us
Aurora Utilities is a fast-growing, independent electricity network operator operating at the heart of the UK's energy transition. Backed by I Squared Capital, a global specialist infrastructure investment manager, the business is expanding rapidly across the UK's commercial and residential energy markets.
We work across some of the UK's most exciting infrastructure sectors, including renewable energy, battery storage, EV infrastructure, data centres and major commercial developments. Thanks to an innovative, bespoke and agile business model, Aurora is helping to deliver the electricity networks needed to support a changing and increasingly electrified energy landscape.
A key part of this approach has been the development of a dedicated, innovative in-house legal team, providing the business with comprehensive legal and regulatory expertise and helping to develop practical solutions to the challenges of a rapidly evolving sector.
We are now looking to appoint a Legal Counsel to join the business and work closely with Alex Lane, our Head of Legal and colleagues across Aurora.
The Opportunity
This is a genuinely varied in-house legal role, spanning commercial, corporate, regulatory and governance matters.
You will work closely with teams throughout Aurora, providing practical day-to-day legal support while gaining a strong understanding of the legal, commercial and regulatory issues facing a rapidly expanding infrastructure business.
This is an excellent opportunity for a commercially minded lawyer looking to make their first move in-house, or take the next step in their in-house career, within an exciting and rapidly evolving sector.
What you'll be doing
Working closely with the Head of Legal, you will:
- Provide practical, commercially focused legal advice to teams across the organisation.
- Draft, review and negotiate a range of commercial contracts and project documentation.
- Support the business across corporate, governance and shareholder matters.
- Assist with corporate transactions, investments and restructuring activity.
- Contribute to Aurora's regulatory and compliance activities.
- Work with external advisers and help manage legal matters efficiently and pragmatically.
- Provide support relating to company secretarial and board governance processes.
- Assist with data protection and wider privacy compliance.
- Develop and maintain legal templates, precedents and practical guidance.
- Partner with colleagues across commercial, finance, technical, operations and project teams.
No two days are likely to be the same, and the role will offer significant visibility across Aurora and regular interaction with senior stakeholders.
About you
We're interested in speaking with qualified solicitors who are commercially minded, pragmatic and keen to build their in-house legal career.
You may currently be:
- A lawyer in private practice looking to make your first move in-house; or
- An in-house lawyer looking for greater responsibility and variety.
Experience in one or more of the following areas would be particularly relevant:
- Commercial contracts
- Corporate law
- Infrastructure or projects
- Energy or utilities
- Regulatory or compliance
However, we're really looking for someone with a strong legal foundation, sound commercial judgement and the curiosity and ambition to build experience across a diverse range of matters.
You'll be comfortable operating in a fast-moving environment, balancing competing priorities and building strong relationships with stakeholders at all levels.
Why Aurora?
Aurora was created to provide faster, innovative and flexible solutions to the UK's evolving electricity infrastructure requirements. The work we do sits at an important intersection of infrastructure, energy and commercial development. Put simply, we play an important role in supporting the UK's future economic growth and development.
You'll be joining a genuinely business-facing team, providing practical advice and solutions that have a direct impact on how Aurora operates and grows.
Working closely with the Head of Legal, you'll encounter a wide range of legal and commercial issues that would be difficult to replicate within a larger, more siloed legal function.
This is an opportunity to:
- Build a well-rounded in-house legal skillset.
- Work directly with senior stakeholders.
- Gain experience across commercial, corporate, regulatory and governance matters.
- Develop your career alongside a growing legal function and rapidly expanding business.
- Play a meaningful role in a business supporting the future of UK energy infrastructure and supply.
If you're a commercially minded lawyer looking for a varied and rewarding in-house opportunity, we'd be delighted to hear from you.
Aurora is an inclusive business that values the wellbeing of its people and strives to create a positive working environment where diversity and inclusion are actively encouraged.
We operate a hybrid working policy and are happy to consider flexible working arrangements where appropriate.
