How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

You will also be responsible for the safe storage, handling and preparation of chemicals and other scientific materials, whilst ensuring that appropriate health and safety procedures are followed at all times.

The successful candidate will be confident working independently, able to manage competing priorities and comfortable supporting a busy secondary-school Science Department.

    Key Responsibilities

Prepare laboratory equipment, chemicals, specimens and other resources for practical Science lessons.
Support teachers with the smooth delivery of practical activities across Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
Set up and clear away practical experiments and demonstrations.
Maintain laboratories, preparation rooms, equipment and Science resources to a high standard.
Ensure chemicals and other materials are stored, labelled and handled safely.
Follow and maintain appropriate COSHH and health and safety procedures.
Monitor stock levels and assist with ordering and maintaining laboratory supplies.
Carry out routine checks and basic maintenance of scientific equipment.
Ensure laboratories are clean, safe and appropriately prepared before and after practical sessions.
Support the Science Department with general technical and practical duties.
Work collaboratively with teaching staff and other members of the school's support team.
Maintain accurate records relating to equipment, chemicals, stock and health and safety where required.

    Essential Requirements

Please note: this position is specifically for candidates who have previous professional experience working within schools or education settings. Applicants without school or education experience will not be considered.

    The successful applicant must have:

Previous experience working as a Science Technician, Laboratory Technician or similar technical role within a school or education setting.
A Bachelor's degree in a Science-related subject, with significant laboratory-based experience as a key part of the degree.
Current or previous COSHH training and a strong understanding of safe chemical handling and laboratory procedures.
A sound understanding of laboratory health and safety requirements.
Practical knowledge across one or more Science disciplines, ideally Biology, Chemistry and/or Physics.
Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
The ability to work effectively as part of a busy school Science Department.
A proactive, reliable and professional approach to work.
The confidence to work independently while supporting teachers and other school staff.
