As the business continues to develop, they are looking to appoint a hands on Commercial Manager to strengthen the team and take commercial responsibility across a number of projects.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor looking to step up, or an existing Commercial Manager who still enjoys being close to the detail rather than simply managing from above.
The business has traditionally delivered a strong pipeline of education projects, typically valued around £2m–£3m, alongside a growing presence within the residential sector.
They are looking for someone commercially sound, hands on and comfortable taking ownership of projects from a commercial perspective.
You will work closely with the directors and senior leadership team being responsible for the commercial management of projects from cradle to grave.
Responsibilities will include:
* Procurement and management of subcontractor packages
* Cost planning, forecasting and reporting
* Valuations, variations and change management
* Managing commercial risk and identifying opportunities
* Subcontractor payments and account management
* Final account negotiation
* Working closely with operational teams to maintain project performance
* Building and maintaining strong client and consultant relationships
* Supporting and developing junior members of the commercial team
The Person
They aren't looking for someone who has moved completely away from the numbers.
The successful individual will be a commercial professional who understands the detail, takes ownership and is comfortable getting involved when required.
At the same time, client facing ability is extremely important. You will need to be personable, credible and confident representing the business, with the ability to build strong relationships with clients, consultants and the wider supply chain.
Ideally, you will have:
* A strong Quantity Surveying / commercial construction background
* Experience at QS or Commercial Manager level
* Good knowledge of the full commercial lifecycle of a construction project
* Strong procurement, cost control and reporting experience
* Excellent commercial awareness and attention to detail
* Strong client facing and communication skills
* A proactive, hands-on approach
* The confidence to take ownership of projects commercially
* Experience supporting or mentoring junior commercial staff
Progression
The business is looking for someone who can become an important part of the team for the long term.
You won't be expected to walk through the door and immediately take responsibility for the entire commercial function. The intention is to give the successful individual time to understand the business, its projects and its clients before gradually increasing their level of responsibility.
