About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Full Stack Mobile Engineer to join our mobile application development team. You will work closely with business stakeholders, product owners, designers, testers and fellow engineers to deliver high-quality digital products used by thousands of learners and driving instructors across the UK.

The role has a strong focus on Java backend development, REST API development, database integration and end-to-end software delivery. Experience with Flutter is desirable, while knowledge of AWS and Sitecore would be advantageous.

You will take ownership of features from discovery through implementation, deployment and production support. You will also contribute to modern engineering practices and the responsible use of AI-assisted software development tools.

Key Responsibilities

* Design, develop, test, deploy and support full-stack mobile application features.

* Develop scalable and maintainable backend services using Java.

* Design and develop RESTful APIs connecting mobile applications with backend services.

* Integrate applications with relational and NoSQL databases, content management systems and third-party services.

* Contribute to mobile application development using Flutter and Dart where required.

* Take ownership of features from discovery and requirements gathering through to production support.

* Work with product owners and business stakeholders to understand business challenges and translate requirements into technical solutions.

* Investigate and resolve application, API, integration and production issues.

* Write secure, maintainable, reusable and well-tested software.

* Participate in code reviews, automated testing and continuous integration activities.

* Work with AWS and modern cloud deployment and operational practices.

* Collaborate with engineers, testers, designers and technical and non-technical stakeholders.

* Contribute to Agile planning, technical discussions, solution design and retrospectives.

* Use AI-assisted development tools responsibly while reviewing and validating generated code and solutions.

* Contribute to improvements in engineering processes, development tools, technical standards and ways of working.

Essential Skills and Experience

The successful candidate should have strong commercial experience in software engineering, backend development or full-stack development, together with proven hands-on experience developing Java-based backend services.

You should have practical experience designing and developing RESTful APIs and integrating backend services with mobile applications and databases. Experience with relational or NoSQL databases, SQL, Git, automated testing and modern software development practices is required.

You should understand software development lifecycle principles, continuous integration, code review, secure coding and production support. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are essential, together with the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Desirable Technical Experience

Experience with Flutter and Dart for cross-platform mobile application development would be beneficial. Knowledge of AWS services such as Lambda, SQS and CloudFormation is also desirable.

Experience with Sitecore or other headless Content Management Systems would be advantageous. Additional experience with SQL Server, database design, Jest, Infrastructure as Code, DevOps, CI/CD, microservices or cloud-native development would be useful.

Experience working within Agile or Scrum product teams and using AI-assisted software development tools is also desirable.

You should also be comfortable using AI-assisted development tools responsibly. This includes critically reviewing AI-generated code, validating technical recommendations and ensuring that all delivered software meets appropriate standards for security, quality and maintainability.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work across backend services, mobile applications, APIs, databases and cloud technologies while contributing to the continued improvement of engineering practices.

Education and Qualifications

A degree or equivalent qualification in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology or a related discipline is desirable. Equivalent professional software engineering experience will also be considered.

Relevant certifications in Java, AWS, Cloud, DevOps or Agile methodologies would be advantageous but are not essential.
