How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

Take ownership of your own projects earlier than most: an established London construction consultancy is looking for an Assistant Building Surveyor who wants to run small works from inception to completion, write specifications, and help shape a growing team.

This is a multi-disciplinary practice with building surveying at its core. You'll work across both public and private sector clients, predominantly housing associations and local authorities, with a workload centred on Section 20 major works including internal and external decorations, roof replacements, and planned maintenance schemes. It's not all cyclical works, though: the practice can offer larger, more complex instructions as you develop.

    The Assistant Building Surveyor Role

Day to day, you'll manage your own small projects from start to finish, taking them through specification writing, tendering, contract administration, and practical completion. The workload suits someone who wants genuine project responsibility rather than shadowing a senior or being passed piecemeal tasks.

There's also a clear opportunity to lead and develop a young team, which is unusual at this level and a genuine draw for anyone with a bit of ambition. You'll report directly to senior leadership with minimal layers in between.

Duties of the Assistant Building Surveyor to include:

Managing small building projects from inception to completion
Preparing specifications and schedules of work for planned maintenance and Section 20 schemes
Administering contracts and overseeing works on site
Liaising with housing association and local authority clients
Coordinating internal and external decoration programmes and roof replacement projects
Supporting the delivery of larger project instructions as they arise
Helping to mentor and organise a small team of junior staff
Producing defect reports and condition assessments as requiredThe Person?

A practical, organised Assistant Building Surveyor with enough post-graduate experience to take the lead on straightforward projects without constant supervision.

The Assistant Building Surveyor will ideally have:

A degree in building surveying or a related construction discipline
One to three years' post-graduate experience in a consultancy or housing environment
Hands-on experience writing specifications and schedules of work
Familiarity with Section 20 consultation processes and planned maintenance contracts
Exposure to both public and private sector clients
Working towards or ready to begin the APCIn Return………?

Salary of £32,000 - £40,000 depending on experience
    Pension contributions
25 days' holiday plus bank holidays
    Structured APC support towards MRICS
Genuine early responsibility and project ownershipIf you believe you can deliver this rewarding role to a high standard, or are a Building Surveyor considering your next career move, please contact Stuart Miller at Brandon James on (phone number removed).
