A Fantastic Opportunity: Field Telemetry Technician
At SP Electricity North West, we're transforming the way our network operates as we evolve from a Distribution Network Operator (DNO) to a Distribution System Operator (DSO). At the heart of this transformation is the development of a Smart Grid, enabling greater visibility, automation and control across our electricity network.
We're looking for a skilled and motivated Field Telemetry Technician to join our team and play a vital role in supporting the technologies that keep our network running efficiently and reliably.
As a field-based technician, you'll be responsible for the installation, maintenance and repair of Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) and other intelligent electronic devices that form part of our SCADA and Control Systems. Your work will help deliver real-time monitoring and control of the electricity network, supporting the transition to a smarter, more flexible energy system.
The successful candidate must, at the start of employment have permission to work in the UK without sponsorship.
What you’ll be doing
As a Field Telemetry Technician, your responsibilities will include:
* Installing, maintaining and supporting RTUs and other intelligent electronic devices across the network.
* Diagnosing faults and carrying out repairs in line with maintenance standards and schedules.
* Supporting the operation and development of Electricity North West's SCADA, Telemetry and Automation systems.
* Programming and configuring equipment using specialist software and IT systems.
* Analysing telemetry and fault data to help improve network performance and reliability.
* Working closely with internal departments, contractors and other stakeholders to deliver telemetry projects and operational activities.
* Supporting the implementation of new technologies that contribute to our Smart Grid ambitions.
* Ensuring full compliance with Electricity North West's Health, Safety and Environmental standards and policies.
* Adhering to relevant codes of practice, Electricity Distribution Safety Rules and Network Management System requirements.
What we’re looking for
We're keen to hear from candidates who have a background in electrical or electronic engineering and enjoy diagnosing technical issues in a field-based environment.
Essential skills and experience
* City & Guilds Level 2 or NVQ Level 2 qualification in Electrical or Electronic Engineering (or equivalent).
* Willingness to continue professional development and work towards an ONC/HNC qualification.
* Completed apprenticeship in Electrical or Electronic Engineering.
* Experience in electrical or electronic fault finding, repair and maintenance.
* Strong understanding of DC and AC power systems.
* Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office and the use of laptops and configuration software.
* Familiarity with automation.
* Ability to work safely and identify risks in a range of operational environments.
* Excellent communication and teamworking skills.
* Full UK driving licence.
Desirable skills and experience
* ONC or equivalent qualification in Electrical or Electronic Engineering.
* Knowledge of electricity distribution networks and the transition from DNO to DSO operations.
* Understanding of telecommunications principles and telemetry systems.
* Familiarity with SCADA, automation systems or network monitoring technologies.
You'll be a highly motivated individual with strong analytical and problem-solving skills, capable of managing your workload and delivering high-quality results. You'll have a customer-focused approach, a commitment to safety and a passion for technology and innovation.
