How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    R&D Scientist

    Working within a highly technical R&D environment, you will play a key role in designing, developing and validating new scientific solutions, using your expertise in MATLAB, data analysis, modelling and algorithm development to improve system performance and detection capability.

    The Opportunity

    You will be responsible for leading scientific research projects from concept through to delivery, developing new approaches to enhance imaging performance, increase probability of detection and reduce false positives across a range of applications.

    The role will involve a combination of:

    * Applied physics and experimental research

    * Imaging technology development

    * Data analysis and algorithm development

    * Machine learning / artificial intelligence applications

    * Scientific modelling and simulation

    * Technical reporting and stakeholder engagement

    A strong understanding of MATLAB is essential, as you will use MATLAB extensively as a primary development tool to analyse complex datasets, model scientific problems and create new algorithmic solutions.

    Key Responsibilities

    * Design, lead and manage scientific research projects, experiments and technical evaluations from inception through to delivery.

    * Use MATLAB extensively to develop, test and optimise algorithms and analytical solutions.

    * Analyse complex datasets and translate findings into technical reports, recommendations and executive summaries.

    * Develop machine learning and AI-based algorithms, including deep learning approaches, to improve detection performance and reduce false positives.

    * Work closely with engineering, operations and leadership teams to integrate scientific recommendations into products and processes.

    * Support the development of advanced imaging solutions involving X-ray technology, optics and related scientific disciplines.

    * Present research outcomes to internal stakeholders, customers, partners and wider technical communities.

    * Maintain high standards of scientific rigour, quality and compliance.

    What We Are Looking For

    * Applicants must have the right to work in the UK and be eligible to obtain UK Security Clearance (SC).

    * Degree qualified in Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Mathematics or a related scientific discipline.

    * Strong commercial or academic experience using MATLAB for modelling, simulation, data analysis or algorithm development.

    * Experience developing scientific algorithms or analysing complex datasets.

    * Understanding of imaging technologies, optics, sensors, signal processing or related areas would be highly advantageous (but NOT essential)

    * Experience with machine learning, AI or deep learning techniques would be beneficial.

    * Strong problem-solving ability with a passion for applying science to real-world technology challenges.
